India foreign policy thread

I am hearing that India will implement profile based visas for Bangladeshis. It’s an extension of the way Pakistanis are handled.

Apparently, India will use AI to scour the internet for anti-India rhetoric. Not just the offenders but their extended family might also get barred.

Remember, India effectively runs most of the social media sites on behalf of US owned companies like Facebook and X. And have full access to private data.

@SoulSpokesman and @uksyl anti-India elements will just have to find another country. Hopefully it will be cheaper and better - as they claim.

Bangladesh has no option but to have friendly relations with India. Despite whatever issues Dhaka and New Delhi have with each other it's not like India nuked Bangladesh, which the US did with Japan and now they are close allies. India and China do billions of trade with each other despite having territorial disputes which have escalated into actual military skirmishes.

Aside from that I can understand why the New Delhi authorities might restrict visas to certain anti-Indian elements in Bangladesh but I don't think this should extend to family bans. I know people whose siblings are totally different people to them or even have enmity with each other. But on the other hand those extreme India-haters in Bangladesh can't complain too much because if they hate India so much why would they want to visit it and plus for every action there is a reaction.

Also I hope "anti-Indian" isn't extended to being anti current incumbent ruling party in New Delhi. Imagine Rahul Gandhi became prime minister and he banned anyone from Bangladesh who wasn't a fan of his party. Many in India and abroad are not fans of the current radical right wing extremist Hindutva party in power and Indian citizens have a democratic right to verbally express their disapproval of the current ruling party which I think Bangladeshis do as well.

The best way to marginalise the extremists is to deepen trade ties.

Bangladesh’s reliance on garments exports to EU/US - has put a floor on Islamism.

It means there will be a severe price for Mullah giri in everyday life.

Reliance on UN peacekeeping money has put a lid on martial law.

India needs to learn the lesson - if it too wants to illicit similar behaviour.

Anti-Indian behaviour can be eliminated with deeper trade and academic ties.

India should open Bangladesh branches for its IITs. Allowing students to do their final year in India.

Before our Bangladeshi Friends start ranting and go all gung ho about medical tourism in SEA and China just remember

1. China and SEA are about 3 to 5 times richer than both of our countries and their medical tourism industry caters to first world and 2nd world countries not us poor 3rd world folks

2. Yes their medical facilities are better (infact way better) than India but they will cost you an arm and a leg.
A simple knee replacement surgery costs 3000 dollars in India but 9000 dollars in China and this is on the low end

3. SEA countries are cheaper than China but not cheap enough for your average bangladeshi to be able to afford it.

For what it's worth Indian Hospitals provide good enough service at a cheap enough price that most people can afford it, So yeah good luck to you folks, this will not be pleasant at all

One of my relatives in law had knee replacement surgery on both legs last year, the full cost was 31,673.15CNY ($4,300), and after reimbursement from her health insurance she actually paid 4,705.49CNY ($640).

btw: China's urban residents pay about $70 a year for health insurance. Foreigners can also enroll.

Sad to see this, hopefully the numbers of medical visas being issued can revert to the level prior to the removal of Hasina, obviously contingent on Bangladesh and India having good relations with each other which is an absolute must for us Bangladeshis in our national project to combat poverty. I think some of the more extreme anti-India rhetoric from some young people and others has subsided in the past few months so hopefully New Delhi and Dhaka can have better relations.

Little to add to Joe's reply.

There is usual cavalcade of dimwits (on this thread of various baby out with bathwater brigade stripes) and hotheads/loudmouths that have hijacked things to degree they have out there in reality (making use of law+order dereliction and extremism that has inflicted in various corners inside BD)....at cost to the "normies" of both sides so to speak. It is reflected in its way (past delhi centre) and what say Didi in WB has been saying about the situation since her initial congratulatory message to Yunus govt in aug 2024.

Even with situation of Indian consulates tightening up in BD, there are I guess multi-year entry visas (already issued and continued to be honoured at Indian border as is) that many BDeshi's have and their continued travel to India even with drastic reduction to december level (around 50,000) would mean (if it holds as is) something like 6-7 times number of BDeshis that travel to PRC yearly....and whatever the total is for ASEAN et al too.

Rebound wise to the prior 2 million per year level and then growth past that (and the core important stuff like medical that is contained within this) will happen slow or fast commensurate to what Joe describes ...the requiring toning down of anti-India radicals (that sorely want to wag the dog by its tail) offering room for Indian voices to pressure Indian govt to reciprocrate for the normie bulk dynamics "past politics" to return to better working order.

In the interim, BD has ~ 1 trillion USD wealth estimated by credit suisse, it will have to dip into (for the prioritized compelled reasons that are internal scarcity driven like medical) to see the current tensions through.

We will see what these numbers are this year later with the data...and how that correlates with the relationship dynamic reflecting more towards reality (dog wag tail) again.

What does the $70 cover. What’s the max claim per year?

In the U.K. I have private health insurance from Bupa and dental cover. It costs the company a fortune.

Whilst the dental cover is very comprehensive - health cover has too many holes.

The white western countries of Europe fought each other for centuries e.g. the seven years war, the one hundred years war, the first world war, the second world war you name it....

then they settled down and realised no more wars and let's trade whilst preserving our national identity, independence and character but be strong together against the outside world the EU.

One of the seminal moments of the post-war European reconciliation was the Elysee treaty of 1963 when age old foes France and Germany signed a treaty of friendship.

"The Élysée Treaty was a treaty of friendship between France and West Germany, signed by President Charles de Gaulle and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer on 22 January 1963 at the Élysée Palace in Paris. With the signing of this treaty, Germany and France established a new foundation for relations, bringing an end to centuries of French–German enmity and wars."

Bangladesh and India need to focus on doing something similar and concentrating on a relationship which prioritises the optimisation of trade and poverty alleviation.

The anti-India hysteria emanating from certain quarters in Bangladesh has died down since August and frankly it was very unhealthy and alarming but not representative of the sentiment of most Bangladeshis. I am not saying people adore India, we are a proud independent country but nor do people want war or constant hostility. The best thing for the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) technocrats in New Delhi is what you suggested enhance co-operation so that Bangladesh is so integrated economically with India that the key decision makers in business (and thus the political parties connected with them) and the elite want to preserve that.

Most Muslim countries have good relations with India, even the Taliban,

Afghanistan doesn't even have a direct border with India, whereas we do so we have more reason to want to have mutually beneficial ties.

So we need to follow the rest of the Muslim world in having good relations with India.

Yep!

Bangladesh needs to stop looking at India through the lens of East Pakistan.

East Pakistan is now defunct!

Need to laser focus on what’s in the interest of Bangladesh.

Large cohort in Bangladesh cannot forgive India for consigning East Pakistan to history lol

Reimbursement rates are not the same depending on hospital level. The highest level of tertiary hospitals can only reimburse 70% of the cost, while the lowest level of first-class hospitals (e.g. community hospitals) can reimburse 95%. The scope of reimbursement mainly includes outpatient expenses, inpatient expenses, inpatient medicines, examinations and surgical treatments, as well as radiotherapy and chemotherapy for serious illnesses such as malignant tumors.

If only India looked at bangladesh through the lens of east pakistan.

The leniency in Indian policy towards BD has cost us a lot ,specially in border areas.

India is correcting that historical flawed policy very slowly.

I hope it picks up pace ! visa regime, water policy etc etc

@Joe Shearer and @SoulSpokesman

I suspect the BJP has significantly tightened up visas for Muslims.

Any data on visa and entries by religion?

Large number of Bangladeshi Hindus going to India skews the number. Especially when compared to China.

In summary, it’s good for minor surgery and primary care.

Not so good for anything serious.
