India Moves to Join France’s FCAS Sixth-Generation Fighter Programme After Germany’s Exit

How many local manufacturing/TOT projects/IP transfer projects does India need? You have been doing them since the late 50's and still have not been able to use it effectively before the knowledge becomes obsolete and you then have to ask for TOT again ??

What is the point?

This is a really good point. Countries in the 60s, 70s and 80s like South Korea, Japan and Turkiye all bought massive numbers of F-16s (F-2 Japanese version). All then licensed assembled and used this experiance to develop their own industries. As a result Turkiye, Japan and South Korea all now making their own 5/6th gen planes.

India assembled Gnat, MIG-21, Jaguar and SU-30, and made the Marut. What happened!?

It was cancelled largely because France and Germany had increasingly different requirements for the future fighter.

For example, France wanted the aircraft to be capable of operating from its future aircraft carrier, while Germany had no such requirement. This contributed to differences in the aircraft's design, size, weight and overall configuration.

These differences, combined with the Dassault–Airbus workshare dispute, ultimately made the joint fighter program unworkable.

But Indian requirements are the same as France's, more closely matching!

Regarding AMCA -AMCA is India’s indigenous 5th-gen fighter program and should continue independently. At the same time, India can work with France on 6th-gen technology. Both can go together—AMCA for self-reliance, and French collaboration for additional technology and learning that can help India build future-generation fighters.

Doing 2 expensive different programs that could eat the same market would requires lot of resources.

For India with around 80 billion USD defense budget per year currently (and will further go up as the economy grow) and both China and Pakistan as main adversary, it could possibly happen though. But for Indonesia, I dont recommend it, better stick to KF21 program for the next 30 years for main jet fighter. It is despite Indonesia is projected as 4th largest economic power in the world around 20 years from now.

But India has different challenge for sure and now we just have to wait France to decide, but I predict at maximum India should be happy with junior partner status (with possible France rejection too (30 % chance according to me)).

Money talks...

There was a time when Russia was willing to share some of its most sophisticated military technology with India. But over time, it ended up offering access to almost anything to India and China—as long as they were willing to pay.

And an $80 billion defence budget doesn't make that much difference in this context. India wouldn't be paying the entire amount in a single year for a large fighter-aircraft deal. The cost would be spread over 6-8 and more on production years, with payments made during development, production, and delivery.

Don't worry about the parallel projects and costs

It all sounds sweet but totally off from reality, parallel project you said, what a joke, still thinks you can buy off capabilities while your airforce has not yet received a single tejas mk1a after assembled Su 30mki for decades, rafael for almost ten years, what have you learned to be exact?

Fifth gen is already a pipe dream for India and you are talking about sixth gen, all those hundred billion dollars could have stayed inside the country to enhance supply chain, facilities, recruit talents etc etc, especially for a country with weak industrial foundation.

France hasn't even shown it can make a 5th generation fighter or stealth UAV. They are at least 25 to 30yrs from 6th gen if lucky. Even the usa would be at least another 15yrs before 6th gen is incorporated into their military so we can expect France to take far longer.

It is 5th gen, including Tempest

6th gen is just branding that they make. Real 6 gen then we can see US and China program, different with both European program in term of design.
