India is set to resume methanol exports to Bangladesh by waterway, with two cargo vessels carrying the chemical from Assam's Dibrugarh expected to sail for Bangladesh through the Brahmaputra River.
The shipment will mark the resumption of the waterway export route from Dibrugarh for the first time since India's independence, Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd (APL) Chairman Bikul Deka said.
The two vessels, belonging to the Assam government's Inland Water Transport Department, have been leased by APL to transport methanol to Bangladesh through National Waterway 2.
Each vessel has been loaded with 27 containers, with each container carrying 20 tonnes of methanol. The vessels will therefore carry 540 tonnes each.
The vessels are expected to travel approximately 783km from Bogibeel to the Bangladesh border in around seven days.
The methanol will be transported from the newly developed Bogibeel Inland Water Transport Terminal to Dhaka, according to India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
The development comes as India seeks to revive inland waterway connectivity with Bangladesh, with the Brahmaputra serving as a key route for transporting goods between the two countries.
