I'm willing to bet your wife is NOT a foreign student who came here on a student visa.

She started out as an international student. She was actually told in orientation about facilities available to international students and that included food bank for subsidized/free edible items.

In Canada, the expectation is, that students should be able to support living expense. However it is not that they can not use subsidized/free items. If some things are earmarked for ALL students, they can use it. International students also get subsidized bus passes, like all students get in canada.

These subsidies/free items are for academia and students. I have never seen universities differentiating students based on their origin (internationa or domestic).

People are confusing university based food banks with soup kitchens and poor people's support. They are not same. University food banks are for students and university staff.

For that matter there are stecific jobs on campus open to all students. It has never been a requirement by immigration or university that such jobs should only be for domestic students.

All of this outrage is mostly misunderstanding or deliberate misrepresentation of academic facilities. Atleast for international students in most universities.

Anyone who spends the time to scam a foodbank needs that food. Let him have it. It's $10-$15 worth of basic food items there.

The outrage is perfectly logical.

If someone enters a country on a specialist visa, while claiming a specific threshold of financial sustainability as a prerequisite for that visa, then is found to fail to meet the claimed threshold, the solution should be deportation. This is simple breach of terms of visa application. Why should Indian students (or anyone) get some sort of special treatment regarding adherence to visa conditions?

It is perfectly possible to live at the basic adult human daily caloric requirement for £5-10 a day (or even less) for food/drink if one shops frugally. If £1529 is the mandatory monthly minimum income to be demonstrable (figure is for London, admittedly), then that individual can easily afford their groceries (after rent, bills etc is all paid for) and would be utilising a food bank fraudulently.

I fail to see why food banks should give free food to those who have demonstrated that they have enough income to not actually need their services.
