Jakarta. Indonesia officially became the president of the UN Human Rights Council for 2026 on Thursday, marking the first time for Jakarta to be at the group’s helm.

Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro, the senior Indonesian diplomat who now presides over the council, said that Jakarta would not be selective about the types of issues it would handle during its leadership.

“We believe in and are fully committed — like all of you council members — to the core principles of universality, objectivity, and non-selectivity in the consideration of human rights issues,” Sidharto told the body's organizational meeting in its headquarters.

The council's main task is to treat all human rights, including the right of development, in a fair and equal manner, Sidharto said.

Sidharto brought up how Indonesia had long been a member of the council, citing Jakarta’s interest in becoming a “bridge builder”. Indonesia also vowed to “engage closely” with everyone, be it members, human rights institutions, and regional organizations, as Jakarta pursues what it calls “a presidency for all”.

The UN Human Rights Council, also known as the UNHRC, assumes a rotating presidency that changes every year, representing a different region each time. It is the Asia-Pacific’s turn to lead the council this year, and the regional group has nominated Jakarta as its sole candidate.

Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai recently claimed that Indonesia would try to address the Venezuela crisis as the UNHRC president. Caracas is witnessing major political shifts after US forces captured Venezuela’s now-ousted leader Nicolas Maduro.

Indah Nuria Savitri, a senior official at the Foreign Ministry, later clarified that the UNHRC indeed aimed to safeguard human rights around the world. However, the body’s discussions will be limited to “Venezuela’s internal human rights affairs” for now, unless the council calls for a special session that addresses the US strike.

“So it is of a context different from what is going on in Venezuela. If there needs to be further discussions [on the Venezuela crisis], the UNHRC has the urgent debate or special session mechanism. To this day, there has been no request for such a session,” Indah told reporters in Jakarta.

Ranked: The Countries Adding the Most to Global GDP (2026–2030)

Published 19 hours ago

Over the next five years, nearly half of all projected global GDP growth is expected to come from just three countries: China, the United States, and India.

While nearly every economy is projected to expand through 2030, the bulk of new output will be concentrated among a small group of heavyweight nations.

This ranking looks at which nations are expected to add the most to global GDP between 2026 and 2030, based on IMF World Economic Outlook (WEO) projections. Importantly, these figures reflect nominal GDP increases in U.S. dollars and are not in real terms (i.e. adjusted for inflation).

Italian Senate Approves Grant of Aircraft Carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi to Indonesia

March 25, 2026

AIRSPACE REVIEW — The Defense Committee of the Italian Senate (Committee III) has officially issued a favorable opinion (parere favorevole) on the Italian government’s plan to grant the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi free of charge to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.

The decision was made during a plenary session chaired by Committee Chair Stefania Craxi, following a period of suspension and extended deliberation since early March, as published on the Senato della Repubblica website on March 24.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Italy’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Perego di Cremnago, emphasized that the grant reflects the increasingly close military and commercial cooperation between the two countries.

“The transfer of defense assets to friendly nations is a common practice to strengthen interoperability and trade relations between countries,” Perego said during the session.

Opposition Concerns

Despite the approval, the move faced strong criticism within the Italian parliament.

Several opposition senators, including:

  • Senator Marton (M5S)
  • Senator Delrio (PD-IDP)
raised objections regarding:

  • Lack of transparency
  • Insufficient supporting documentation
They also referred to journalistic investigations questioning the involvement of private companies in the process of transferring the vessel to Indonesia.

About Giuseppe Garibaldi

The Giuseppe Garibaldi is a legendary aircraft carrier that once served as the flagship of the Italian Navy.

The vessel is capable of operating various types of:

  • Attack helicopters
  • Transport helicopters
As a command ship, it is equipped with advanced communication and control systems suitable for large-scale naval operations.

The carrier is also designed to accommodate short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft.

Next Steps and Strategic Impact

Following the Senate’s favorable opinion, administrative procedures at the ministerial level are expected to be finalized soon.

The arrival of the Giuseppe Garibaldi is expected to significantly enhance the power projection capabilities of the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) in the regional arena.
