Jakarta on December 4, 1994, Aero is of
Minangkabau descent and comes from a family deeply rooted in water sports and discipline. He is the son of
Saiful Sutan Aswar, Chairman of the
Indonesia Jetsport Boating Association (IJBA) and Chairman of
Jetski Asia (IJSBA Asia). His younger brother,
Aqsa Sutan Aswar, is also a decorated national jet ski athlete. Aero and Aqsa are the grandsons of
Sutan Aswar, one of the pioneers of the
Indonesian Air Force (AURI).
Growing up in a disciplined and achievement-oriented household, Aero was exposed to competitive sports from a very young age. In addition to jet skiing, he is a
black belt in taekwondo, a background that helped shape his
physical endurance, mental toughness, and discipline as a professional athlete.
From Wonderkid to World-Class Athlete
Aero began riding jet skis at the age of
three and entered his first race at around
four years old. Under the guidance of his father, his talent developed rapidly. Between the ages of
13 and 16, he made history as the
youngest jet ski racer in the world to compete in the
Pro and Grand Prix categories.
His rise to international recognition began in
2010, when he won a
gold medal at the 2nd Asian Beach Games in Muscat, Oman, in the
Runabout Endurance Open category. One year later, he claimed the
Iron Man Offshore Champion 2011 title at the
Mark Hahn 300 in
Arizona, United States.
Peak Achievements on the Global Stage
Aero’s name became firmly established on the global jet ski map after winning the prestigious
2014 IJSBA World Finals in
Lake Havasu, Arizona. Competing in the
Pro Runabout Stock class—one of the most competitive categories in seated jet ski racing—he dominated the event by earning the
highest combined points across two races (Moto 1 and Moto 2), outperforming elite racers from
44 countries and raising Indonesia’s red-and-white flag on the world championship podium.
One year earlier, at the
2013 World Finals, Aero had already drawn attention by finishing
third in the world in the
Grand Prix Runabout class, competing against
46 top global racers and setting the
fastest start record at
56.7 seconds, a historic milestone in the competition.
His consistency continued in
2016, when he once again secured a
world championship title in Florida, despite not having fully recovered from a
leg injury sustained in a racing incident. These accomplishments cement his status as
one of the greatest jet ski athletes Indonesia has ever produced, and a rare figure capable of sustaining elite performance over a long period.
SEA Games 2025: Gold Medal Through Independent Struggle
At the
2025 SEA Games in Thailand, Aero once again proved his class by winning
gold in the open endurance jet ski event. The race demanded extreme physical endurance and unwavering focus, and Aero successfully outperformed athletes from the
host nation and the
Philippines all the way to the finish line.
What made this victory especially remarkable was that Aero competed using a
rented jet ski from Pattaya, purchased with his
own personal funds, rather than official equipment provided by the national team. As a result, the Indonesian team had
limited control over the technical performance of the vehicle, placing Aero at a significant disadvantage compared to competitors who benefited from full institutional support.
Upon returning to Indonesia, Aero delivered a candid statement that quickly went viral:
“Why was it independent? You can ask those who didn’t provide the funds. Fortunately, I have money and gold,”
he said bluntly.
