Patimban Port Officially Launches International Container Shipping Services​

JAKARTA – The arrival of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Aria III, a container vessel measuring more than 200 meters in length, at the container terminal of Patimban Port in Subang, West Java, marks the beginning of a new phase in the development of Indonesia's logistics ecosystem, further integrating the country into global trade networks.

The vessel, which arrived from Singapore before continuing its voyage to Laem Chabang (Thailand) and the major Chinese ports of Shekou, Ningbo, and Shanghai, represents the launch of Patimban Port's first international container shipping service.

According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), approximately 80% of global trade by volume is transported by sea, making port efficiency a key determinant of a country's international competitiveness. This underscores the strategic importance of Patimban Port to Indonesia's national logistics sector.

Against this backdrop, Yukki Nugrahawan Hanafi, Senior Vice President of the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) and Commissioner of PT Pelabuhan Patimban Internasional (PPI), said the introduction of MSC's regular container service represents more than the addition of a new shipping route—it marks the emergence of a new international logistics ecosystem that will strengthen Indonesia's competitiveness in global trade.

"As the world's largest archipelagic nation, Indonesia needs more than just large ports. We need an integrated port network capable of handling international trade efficiently while strengthening the resilience of our national supply chain amid geopolitical uncertainty and global disruptions," Yukki said.

He added that the successful launch of MSC's service is expected to encourage additional international shipping lines to operate from Patimban, expanding connections to Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas.

Patimban's container terminal currently occupies 10 hectares with an annual handling capacity of 250,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Terminal operator PT Patimban Global Gateway Terminal (PGT) plans to expand capacity to 1.65 million TEUs per year.

In the long term, Patimban is designed to handle 7.5 million TEUs annually at its container terminal and 600,000 vehicles per year at its automotive terminal, making it one of Indonesia's largest integrated port developments.

Capacity expansion is being implemented in phases. The container terminal began operations in January 2026 with one Mobile Harbour Crane (MHC), followed by the addition of two more MHCs in April 2026.

Further equipment deployment is scheduled throughout 2026. By September, the terminal is expected to receive nine Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes, three Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, four reach stackers, and 16 terminal trucks. By December, three STS cranes and nine Electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry (E-RTG) cranes are expected to be fully installed and operational.

According to Yukki, once all planned equipment is commissioned, the terminal's annual capacity is projected to increase to approximately 800,000 TEUs.

"The investment in new equipment will not only increase terminal capacity but also improve cargo handling productivity, reduce vessel turnaround time, and enhance schedule reliability for shipping services," he said.

In addition to its container terminal, Patimban has operated an automotive terminal since 2022 on a 22.4-hectare site with an annual capacity of 218,000 completely built-up (CBU) vehicles for both export and import activities.

Improving land connectivity remains a key priority in establishing Patimban as a world-class port. A 37-kilometer toll road linking the Cikopo–Palimanan Toll Road to Patimban is being constructed in phases through the end of 2026, with additional sections expected to become operational in 2027.

Once completed, the toll road is expected to reduce travel time from the East Karawang industrial area and the northern coastal region of West Java from approximately 1.5–2 hours to just 30–40 minutes.

JAKARTA, CNBC Indonesia – State-owned mining holding company MIND ID, together with PT LEN Industri, PT Krakatau Steel, and PT Perminas, has formed a strategic partnership to develop Indonesia's national critical minerals supply chain. The collaboration aims to strengthen the availability of raw materials for strategic industries while increasing the value added of Indonesia's mineral resources.

The partnership agreement was signed during the Danantara's Advanced Materials Industry Dialogue: From Minerals to Manufacturing, held at Wisma Danantara Indonesia on July 9–10, 2026.

Danantara Indonesia CEO Rosan Roeslani said Indonesia must strengthen its position in the global industrial value chain by maximizing the potential of its abundant mineral resources. He encouraged all stakeholders to move beyond resource extraction toward higher-value industrial activities.

According to Rosan, Indonesia possesses substantial reserves of strategic minerals, including nickel, bauxite, copper, tin, and rare earth elements. These resources serve as the foundation for future technologies such as electric vehicle batteries, semiconductors, defense systems, and clean energy technologies.

"For decades, however, we have too often stopped at the extraction stage—exporting raw materials and then importing finished products at many times their original value," Rosan said.

The collaboration is intended to optimize the supply and offtake chain for critical minerals and advanced materials to meet the needs of Indonesia's strategic industries.

It is also expected to accelerate the development of a large-scale domestic advanced materials industry through joint technology development while supporting higher value-added economic growth across strategic industrial sectors.

The initiative extends beyond the development of Indonesia's electric vehicle industry and also targets the aerospace, maritime, basic industrial components, defense, and power sectors.

Danantara Indonesia Chief Technology Officer Sigit P. Santosa said the development of the advanced materials midstream industry should be viewed as a key component of Indonesia's broader industrial transformation.

According to Sigit, Indonesia's objective is to transition toward a technology-driven, high-value manufacturing economy while securing greater control over future strategic supply chains.

He emphasized that Indonesia must capitalize on growing regional demand, strengthen domestic technological capabilities, and compete globally to achieve sustainable economies of scale. As a result, the development of the advanced materials industry should be pursued through a more integrated strategy to enhance the competitiveness of Indonesia's manufacturing sector.

Sigit noted that Indonesia's competitive advantage lies not only in its mineral resources but also in its ability to transform those resources into an integrated advanced materials ecosystem supporting battery manufacturing, clean energy, defense, transportation, and other strategic technologies of the future.

"Nickel remains one of Indonesia's key advantages. However, our broader objective is to build a more diversified, higher value-added, and globally competitive industrial base," Sigit said.

Downstream Industries Account for Nearly 30% of Indonesia's New Investment​

Jakarta. The downstream industrialization program attracted Rp 300.1 trillion ($16.7 billion) in investment during the first half of 2026, accounting for 29.7% of total investment realization and underscoring the government's push to add more value to the country's natural resources before export.

Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani said the sector's contribution has increased significantly since 2023, when downstream industries accounted for only about 24% to 25% of total investment.

“We are seeing a sharp upward trend,” Rosan told reporters at the Presidential Palace on Thursday.

Indonesia launched its downstream industrialization strategy under former President Joko Widodo by banning exports of selected raw commodities -- including nickel ore and copper concentrate -- to encourage domestic processing and manufacturing. The policy has since expanded beyond mining to include agriculture and plantation commodities.

The mineral sector remained the largest recipient of downstream investment, attracting Rp 206.5 trillion, led by nickel, bauxite, copper, iron and steel, and silica processing.

Downstream investment in plantations and forestry reached Rp 54.4 trillion, driven primarily by palm oil, timber, and rubber processing, while the oil and gas sector attracted Rp 35.4 trillion.

Investment in downstream agriculture and fisheries totaled Rp 3.8 trillion, covering commodities such as sea salt, tuna, shrimp, seaweed, crab, and tilapia.

Foreign investors contributed Rp 212.8 trillion, or 70.9%, of total downstream investment, with Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Japan, and the United States ranking as the five largest sources of capital.


Overall Investment Nears Half-Year Target
Indonesia attracted Rp 1,010.6 trillion ($56.1 billion) in total investment during the first half of 2026, an increase of 7.2% from a year earlier despite continuing geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

The figure represents 49.5% of the government's full-year investment target of Rp 2,041.3 trillion.

“We have recorded Rp 1,010.6 trillion in investment realization during the first half, which keeps us on track to meet this year's target,” Rosan said.

Downstream Investment Reaches IDR 152.7 Trillion (9.4 Billion USD) in Q2 2026, Bauxite Surpasses Nickel​

JAKARTA – Investment in Indonesia's downstream processing sector remained a key driver of capital inflows in the second quarter of 2026. Realized downstream investment reached IDR 152.7 trillion, up 5.7% year-on-year, accounting for 29.8% of total national investment during the period.

Minister of Investment and Downstream Industries and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, said downstream investment continued to be dominated by the mineral sector. For the first time, however, bauxite overtook nickel as the largest destination for downstream investment.

"Nickel has usually ranked first. This time, however, there has been a shift. Bauxite has become the largest investment destination because several bauxite projects are currently being developed by both domestic and foreign investors," Rosan said during a press conference at the Presidential Palace on Thursday (July 16, 2026).

Rosan said downstream investment in the mineral sector totaled IDR 108.2 trillion, representing 70.9% of total downstream investment. The figure comprised:

• Bauxite: IDR 40.1 trillion
• Nickel: IDR 29.4 trillion
• Copper: IDR 16.7 trillion
• Iron and steel: IDR 13.2 trillion
• Silica sand: IDR 4.0 trillion
• Other minerals—including tin, gold, silver, cobalt, manganese, coal, and Buton asphalt: IDR 4.7 trillion

The plantation and forestry sector recorded downstream investment of IDR 24.6 trillion, led by palm oil at IDR 11.2 trillion, followed by logs at IDR 9.3 trillion, rubber at IDR 2.6 trillion, and other commodities—including nutmeg, pine, coconut, cocoa, and biofuels—worth IDR 1.5 trillion.

Meanwhile, downstream investment in the oil and gas sector reached IDR 17.7 trillion, consisting of IDR 12.8 trillion in oil and IDR 4.9 trillion in natural gas. The fisheries and marine sector attracted IDR 2.2 trillion, covering commodities such as salt, tuna, skipjack, frigate tuna, shrimp, seaweed, crab, and tilapia.

Regionally, downstream investment remained concentrated outside Java, which received IDR 116 trillion, or 75.9% of the total. Investment on Java Island amounted to IDR 36.7 trillion, representing 24.1%.

The five largest destinations for downstream investment were:

• North Maluku: IDR 35.3 trillion
• Central Sulawesi: IDR 32.0 trillion
• West Java: IDR 12.8 trillion
• West Nusa Tenggara: IDR 10.7 trillion
• East Java: IDR 10.4 trillion

By source of funding, foreign direct investment (FDI) remained dominant at IDR 114.4 trillion, accounting for approximately 75% of total downstream investment, while domestic investment contributed IDR 38.3 trillion, or 25%.

Hong Kong was the largest source of downstream investment, contributing IDR 52.4 trillion, followed by Singapore (IDR 29.8 trillion), China (IDR 10.7 trillion), Japan (IDR 4.0 trillion), and the United States (IDR 3.9 trillion).

Rosan said the government will continue promoting downstream industrialization beyond initial processing stages toward the production of higher value-added products.

He added that Indonesia's nickel downstream ecosystem could serve as a model for other strategic commodities. The country has already established a relatively complete nickel value chain, ranging from nickel ore, nickel matte, nickel sulfate, cathodes, anodes, battery cells, and battery packs to electric vehicle battery recycling facilities.

"Going forward, we want to build the same ecosystem for bauxite, as well as for palm oil, rubber, timber, silica sand, and other commodities. Our focus is on commodities where Indonesia has a competitive advantage and which are already included in the national downstream industrialization blueprint," Rosan said.

Pupuk Indonesia's Net Profit Surges 253% in First Half of 2026 as Transformation Delivers Results​

JAKARTA – State-owned fertilizer producer PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) reported a net profit of IDR 8.51 trillion in the first half of 2026, an increase of 253% year-on-year.

The strong earnings growth was supported by revenue of IDR 59.67 trillion, up 51% from the same period a year earlier.

The company also recorded a 140% increase in EBITDA to IDR 14.28 trillion during the period.

President Director Rahmad Pribadi said the financial performance was driven by higher production volumes and improved operational efficiency, reflecting the company's ongoing business transformation.

He added that consistent operational efficiency and cost discipline have enabled the company to achieve sustainable growth regardless of commodity price cycles.

"With the government's support through Danantara, our comprehensive business transformation has begun to deliver tangible results, as reflected in our strong financial performance. With an increasingly solid financial foundation, we are confident this growth will be sustainable—not only for the company but also through greater contributions to Indonesia's food security," Rahmad said in a written statement on Tuesday (July 14, 2026).

Rahmad said the transformation has also strengthened Pupuk Indonesia's business resilience by making the company more adaptive and sustainable amid global economic uncertainty.

The company has diversified its revenue base by expanding contributions from non-subsidized fertilizer products and non-fertilizer businesses, while broadening its raw material sourcing and contract arrangements to mitigate the impact of global commodity price volatility.

Over the past several years, Pupuk Indonesia has implemented a comprehensive transformation program encompassing operational and digital excellence, business streamlining across the holding company, improvements to the Public Service Obligation (PSO) fertilizer distribution system, and stronger commercial operations.

The transformation has also been supported by Presidential Regulation No. 113 of 2025, which the company described as a key milestone in improving operational efficiency.

As part of its long-term transformation agenda, Rahmad said Pupuk Indonesia plans to revitalize seven fertilizer plants over the next five years, in line with Danantara's strategy to optimize the productivity and value of state-owned enterprise assets.

The company is also preparing several growth initiatives, including expanding and diversifying its product portfolio through the development of methanol and downstream derivatives, clean ammonia, industrial support businesses, and other strategic ventures.

The transformation has also improved farmers' access to subsidized fertilizer. During 2025, Pupuk Indonesia distributed 8.11 million tonnes of subsidized fertilizer, an increase of 10.68% compared with the previous year.

The improvement was supported by the implementation of the i-Pubers digital distribution system, which has simplified and accelerated fertilizer redemption, as well as Presidential Regulation No. 6 of 2025, which streamlined the governance of subsidized fertilizer distribution to make deliveries faster, easier, and more targeted.

As of July 12, 2026, the company had distributed 5.13 million tonnes of subsidized fertilizer, equivalent to 52% of the government's annual allocation of 9.8 million tonnes.

"In line with the state-owned enterprise transformation agenda promoted by Danantara, all of these structural changes ultimately serve one objective: ensuring affordable fertilizer reaches farmers more quickly while maintaining healthier fiscal costs for the government and strengthening national food security," Rahmad said.

Operationally, Pupuk Indonesia continues to emphasize efficiency and asset optimization as long-term business practices to maintain its competitiveness. With a national production capacity of approximately 14.8 million tonnes per year, the company said it has sufficient capacity to meet domestic fertilizer demand while responding to global market opportunities without disrupting supplies to Indonesian farmers.

"For us, sustainable profitability is not about achieving the highest earnings every year, but about building a strong enough foundation to continue growing despite changing global conditions. Our resilience is measured not only by our ability to withstand industry volatility, but also by ensuring that this growth delivers tangible benefits to small businesses and farmers," Rahmad said.

Harita Nickel Accelerates Three Strategic Projects on Obi Island​

JAKARTA – Indonesian integrated nickel mining and downstream producer PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk. (NCKL), or Harita Nickel, is accelerating the completion of three strategic projects at its industrial complex on Obi Island, North Maluku.

The projects include the company's third Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) nickel smelter, a limestone-to-quicklime processing plant, and a tailings recycling facility.

President Director Roy Arman Arfandy said the third RKEF smelter, being developed by subsidiary PT Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), will comprise 12 production lines with an installed capacity of 185,000 tonnes of nickel metal in ferronickel (FeNi) per year.

"KPS is our third RKEF plant and is currently in the final stages of completion," Roy said during an online public presentation on Tuesday (June 30, 2026).

The company completed construction of 10 production lines during 2025, while the remaining two lines were finished in the first quarter of 2026, marking the completion of the plant's main construction phase.

Management has begun gradually ramping up operations on several production lines toward full commercial capacity.

Harita Nickel aims to have all 12 production lines at KPS operating at full capacity by the end of 2026.

Once fully operational, KPS is expected to increase Harita Nickel's total installed ferronickel production capacity on Obi Island to 305,000 tonnes of nickel per year by the end of 2026, complementing the company's two existing smelters.

The first smelter, operated by PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), has an annual production capacity of 25,000 tonnes of nickel, while PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) operates eight production lines with an installed capacity of 95,000 tonnes per year.

In addition to expanding ferronickel production, Harita Nickel is accelerating the development of supporting integrated facilities to reduce reliance on external suppliers.

One of the projects is a quicklime plant being developed through joint venture PT Cipta Kemakmuran Mitra (CKM).

The facility will produce quicklime, a key chemical used in processing low-grade limonite nickel ore at the company's High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) operations.

"CKM will produce quicklime for use in the HPAL process at both PT Halmahera Persada Lygend and PT Obi Nickel Cobalt, our two HPAL plants currently operating on Obi Island," Roy said.

Output from CKM's initial production line will be dedicated to supplying the company's two existing HPAL facilities operated by subsidiaries PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) and PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC).

Danantara Advances 26 Downstream Projects Worth IDR 225 Trillion (US$13.9 Billion)​

JAKARTA – Indonesia's sovereign investment agency, Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (Danantara), is accelerating the implementation of strategic downstream industrialization projects aimed at increasing the value of the country's natural resources, strengthening domestic industries, and creating jobs.

Danantara Chief Operating Officer Dony Oskaria said the agency is currently developing 26 downstream projects with a combined investment value of IDR 225 trillion (approximately US$13.9 billion). The projects are expected to create 37,833 jobs.

The projects are being implemented in two phases.

The first phase, launched with a groundbreaking ceremony on February 6, 2026, comprises six priority projects across 13 locations, with investment totaling IDR 109 trillion (US$6.7 billion) and the potential to create 11,456 jobs.

The second phase, launched on April 29, 2026, includes 10 priority projects at 13 locations, with investment of IDR 116 trillion (US$7.2 billion) and an estimated 26,377 jobs.

According to Dony, downstream industrialization should deliver tangible benefits to Indonesia's economy beyond attracting investment.

"Downstream industrialization not only generates investment, but also creates jobs, stimulates regional economies, and ensures that more value added is retained within the country," Dony said in a statement on Monday (July 13, 2026).

The projects span a range of strategic industries, including aluminum, stainless steel, and copper smelters in the mining sector, as well as sustainable aviation fuel (biojet fuel), bioethanol, palm oil processing, the coconut industry, and integrated poultry farming.

The investments are expected to generate greater domestic value added, create new employment opportunities, and deliver long-term economic benefits for Indonesia and its communities.

AMNT Targets Production of 162,000 Tonnes of Copper Cathodes and 16 Tonnes of Gold in 2026​

JAKARTA – PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMNT), a subsidiary of PT Amman Mineral Internasional Tbk (AMMN), is targeting production of 162,000 tonnes of copper cathodes and 16 tonnes of gold in 2026 as its copper smelter in Sumbawa continues to ramp up operations.

"We are targeting production of around 162,000 tonnes of copper cathodes and approximately 16 tonnes of gold by the end of 2026," AMNT President Director Rachmat Makkasau told a parliamentary hearing with Commission XII on Tuesday (July 14, 2026).

Rachmat said the production targets reflect the recovery of operations at the company's copper smelter in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara, which has begun operating more efficiently following its commissioning phase.

In addition to its main products, the smelter is expected to produce substantial volumes of by-products, including:

• Silver: 45 tonnes
• Selenium: 91 tonnes
• Tellurium: 1.96 tonnes
• Sulfuric acid: approximately 572,000 tonnes

During the first half of 2026, the company produced 46,000 tonnes of copper cathodes and 3.7 tonnes of gold.

The company also reported production of 14.6 tonnes of silver, while output of selenium and sulfuric acid continued to increase.



AMNT's smelter on Sumbawa Island employs Double Flash Technology (DFT) and is designed to process 900,000 tonnes of copper concentrate annually, with all feedstock supplied from the company's Batu Hijau mine.

At full annual capacity, the facility is designed to produce:

• 220,000 tonnes of copper cathodes
• 18 tonnes of gold
• 55 tonnes of silver
• 77 tonnes of selenium
• 830,000 tonnes of sulfuric acid

The 2026 production target marks an important milestone for the company following operational challenges encountered during the smelter's commissioning and ramp-up process, which began in June 2024.

According to Rachmat, the company experienced major technical issues between February and August 2025, including leaks in the acid cooling system and a minor fire caused by a leak in the flash smelting furnace, resulting in extended repair work and lower production.

After implementing comprehensive repairs and mitigation measures in late 2025, AMNT carried out recommissioning in February 2026. Smelter operations gradually recovered and have remained stable since the second quarter of this year.

"Operations resumed around April 2026 and the ramp-up has progressed well. By around June 2026, we were able to process all of the concentrate currently produced by the Batu Hijau mine," Rachmat said.

In 2025, AMMN produced 446,563 dry metric tonnes of copper concentrate, exceeding its original production guidance by approximately 4%, although output declined 41% year-on-year.

The concentrate contained 209 million pounds of copper, about 8% below the company's annual target.

Gold production reached 102,758 ounces in 2025, exceeding the company's initial guidance by 14%.

The company said 2025 was a transition year as mining entered Phase 8 at the Batu Hijau mine, where ore grades were initially lower. Annual production was also affected by the temporary shutdown of its new copper smelter during July and August 2025 to carry out complex repairs to the Flash Converting Furnace (FCF) and Sulfuric Acid Plant (SAP) to ensure the facility's long-term operational reliability.

Indonesian Steel Industry Raises Alarm Over Potential Surge in Chinese Imports​

Jakarta. The Indonesian Iron and Steel Industry Association (IISIA) on Friday warned of a possible influx of Chinese steel products into the domestic market, as China seeks alternative export destinations following the United States’ recent decision to impose a steep 145 percent tariff.

IISIA Chairman Muhammad Akbar Djohan noted that China, the world’s largest iron and steel producer, currently manufactures around 1.2 billion tons annually.

“The tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump may not directly affect Indonesia, but we must anticipate China's move to redirect its steel exports to other countries,” Akbar said in Jakarta. “Indonesia remains an attractive destination for Chinese goods, so proactive steps are needed.”

With its large market size and growing purchasing power, Indonesia presents a lucrative opportunity for foreign steel producers, he added.

“It’s crucial that the government implements effective policies to safeguard the domestic iron and steel industry,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has also slapped a 34 percent tariff on Indonesia, potentially affecting exports to the US. According to IISIA data, Indonesia exported 429,300 tons of steel to the United States in 2024, consisting of 359,500 tons of semi-finished slabs and 7,800 tons of hot-dip galvanized steel. In contrast, Indonesia imported 27,500 tons of steel products from the US, including 12,700 tons of scrap and 12,100 tons of seamless pipes.

Trade Ministry data shows that Indonesia’s overall iron and steel exports surged by 261 percent in 2023, reaching $26.7 billion -- up from $7.39 billion in the previous year. Steel imports during the same period were valued at $11.38 billion.

Indonesia's Aluminum Smelter Pipeline Gains Momentum as Bauxite Downstream Push Accelerates​

JAKARTA – Indonesia's push to develop a domestic aluminum industry is gathering pace, with several large-scale smelter projects advancing across the country as the government seeks to maximize value from its bauxite resources.

However, aluminum smelter development requires substantial capital investment and reliable energy infrastructure, making project execution both capital- and energy-intensive.

The following are Indonesia's major aluminum smelter projects and their targeted commercial operation dates (COD):

1. PT Kalimantan Aluminium Industry (KAI)​

PT Kalimantan Aluminium Industry (KAI), a subsidiary of PT Adaro Minerals Indonesia Tbk (ADMR), is developing an aluminum smelter at the Tanah Kuning International Industrial and Port Estate (KIPI) in Bulungan, North Kalimantan.

The project's Phase I carries an investment of approximately US$2 billion and is designed with an initial production capacity of 500,000 tonnes per year, which is planned to be expanded gradually to 1.5 million tonnes annually.

The project is currently under construction and phased commissioning. Phase I is expected to begin operations between late 2025 and 2026, while full capacity is targeted for 2028–2030.

2. PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) – Integrated Mempawah Smelter​

PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) is developing an integrated aluminum smelter in Mempawah, West Kalimantan.

The facility is designed to produce 600,000 tonnes of aluminum annually and will be integrated with the Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) Phase I and Phase II projects.

The smelter forms part of the IDR 110 trillion (approximately US$6.1 billion) investment program led by PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (MIND ID).

Groundbreaking took place in early 2026, with commercial operations targeted for 2028–2029, subject to the availability of power generation capacity and supporting infrastructure.

3. Inalum – Kuala Tanjung Expansion and Modernization​

Inalum is also expanding and upgrading its existing aluminum smelter in Kuala Tanjung, Batu Bara Regency, North Sumatra.

The project aims to increase annual production capacity from 250,000 tonnes to 500,000 tonnes.

Current work focuses on modernizing reduction pots and improving energy efficiency.

The phased upgrade began in 2024, with full production capacity expected to be reached during 2028–2029.

4. PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia (BAI)​

PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia (BAI), part of the Nanshan Group/Press Metal consortium, is developing an integrated aluminum smelter in the Galang Batang Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on Bintan Island, Riau Islands Province.

The project represents an investment of more than US$1.5 billion and is integrated with an alumina refinery.

The smelter is designed to produce up to 1 million tonnes of aluminum ingots annually.

The initial phase, with a capacity of 250,000 tonnes, is expected to begin operations during 2026–2027, while full capacity is targeted around 2030.

5. PT Huachin Aluminum Indonesia​

PT Huachin Aluminum Indonesia, part of the Tsingshan Group, is constructing an aluminum smelter within the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) and Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) industrial ecosystem.

The project is estimated to require US$800 million to US$1 billion in investment and is designed to produce between 250,000 and 500,000 tonnes of aluminum annually.



Construction and initial commissioning are currently underway.

The first phase, with 250,000 tonnes of annual capacity, is expected to enter phased operations during 2025–2026, followed by subsequent expansion during 2026–2027.

Several Bauxite Smelter Projects Remain Delayed​

Despite progress on several major projects, a number of bauxite smelter developments continue to face delays.

In 2025, Tri Winarno, Director General of Minerals and Coal at Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), said seven bauxite smelter projects had achieved less than 60% construction progress.

The projects have drawn increased government scrutiny following Indonesia's ban on bauxite ore exports, which took effect in June 2023.

"Many of these projects have not progressed because they have been unable to secure investors. That is the reality we face. They are still in the process of seeking financing," Tri said during a parliamentary hearing with Commission XII on April 30, 2025.

The seven projects identified as having stalled progress are:

• PT Laman Mining – Ketapang, West Kalimantan
• PT Kalbar Bumi Perkasa – Sanggau, West Kalimantan (mining license revoked)

Chandra Asri Group Delivers $371 Million Profit in Strong First Half​

Jakarta. Chandra Asri Pacific (Chandra Asri Group) (IDX: TPIA) delivered solid financial results in the first half of 2026, reporting revenue of $5.3 billion, EBITDA of $802.6 million, and net profit of $371.2 million.

The performance reflects the resilience of the company's integrated business model amid continued volatility in the global petrochemical industry. Supported by its diversified portfolio across the Energy, Chemicals, and Infrastructure sectors, Chandra Asri Group continued to strengthen its position through disciplined execution, strategic asset integration, and sustainable business expansion. The move enhances funding flexibility, improves stock trading liquidity, strengthens corporate governance, and increases Chandra Asri Group's appeal to both domestic and international investors.

In the chemicals business, the company continues to expand its regional capabilities through the construction of the Chandra Asri Alkali–Ethylene Dichloride (CA-EDC) plant, which has reached 72% completion and entered the main infrastructure development phase. The National Strategic Project remains on track to begin commercial operations in 2027.

The company has also reached a Final Investment Decision (FID) for its $80 million C2 export expansion project, which is expected to increase export capacity, strengthen supply chain flexibility, and optimize the integration between Aster's operations in Singapore and Chandra Asri Group's downstream facilities in Indonesia.

In the energy segment, Chandra Asri Group continued its post-acquisition integration by combining the Esso fuel station network with its cold storage facilities, expanding its energy mobility capabilities while improving supply chain efficiency.

The company is also advancing the Condensate Splitter Unit (CSU) project and the revitalization of the Single Buoy Mooring (SBM) facility on Pulau Bukom. Both projects remain on schedule and are targeted to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2026. Together, the facilities are projected to contribute an additional $20 million in EBITDA per month, further increasing the energy business' contribution to the group's overall performance.

Meanwhile, infrastructure subsidiary Chandra Daya Investasi (CDI) continued to serve as one of the group's key growth engines through the expansion of its ports and storage, logistics, and maritime businesses.

CDI expanded its strategic collaboration with SCG Barito Logistics (SBL) and Krakatau Bandar Samudera (KBS), achieved 75% progress in the construction of its bitumen storage tank facility, and completed the maiden voyage of the Novah vessel, further strengthening the company's logistics capabilities.

In addition, the establishment of the Aster Power strategic partnership with Sembcorp and CDI, along with the commencement of operations at Aster Ports & Terminals on July 1, 2026, has further strengthened the foundation for the development of the group's regional infrastructure platform.

Chandra Asri's CA-EDC Project Hits 72% Completion Ahead of 2027 Launch​

Jakarta. Chandra Asri Pacific (Chandra Asri Group), a leading energy, chemicals, and infrastructure solutions provider in Southeast Asia, said its subsidiary Chandra Asri Alkali (CAA) has completed 72% of construction on its Chlor Alkali and Ethylene Dichloride (CA-EDC) facility, a strategic project valued at more than $800 million.

The company expects the facility to begin commercial operations in 2027.

As construction progresses, Chandra Asri has also initiated a feasibility study for the project's second phase as part of its long-term strategy to expand production capacity. The expansion is estimated to require an additional investment of around $1 billion, reinforcing the company's commitment to supporting Indonesia's chemical industry with more reliable and competitive supplies of strategic raw materials.

Beyond strengthening domestic industrial resilience, the CA-EDC project is also expected to generate broader economic benefits through job creation and support for local businesses. Around 3,000 workers have been involved during the construction phase, while the completed facility is expected to create about 250 jobs.

"The progress of the CA-EDC facility reflects Chandra Asri's commitment to strengthening the foundation of Indonesia's chemical industry," said President Director and CEO of Chandra Asri Group Erwin Ciputra.

"Through the Phase II feasibility study and the development of supporting infrastructure, we aim to build a more integrated production and distribution ecosystem that enhances the reliability of basic chemical supplies for domestic industries while strengthening Indonesia's position in the regional supply chain," he added.

Once operational, the CA-EDC facility is expected to improve the reliability of caustic soda supply for a wide range of industries while reducing Indonesia's reliance on imports. The plant's annual liquid caustic soda output could replace up to 827,000 tons of imports worth about $293 million (Rp 4.9 trillion). Meanwhile, EDC production will be exported, with potential export revenues reaching as much as $300 million (Rp 5 trillion) per year.

Through the development of the CA-EDC facility and its supporting infrastructure, Chandra Asri Group said it aims to strengthen Indonesia's chemical industry by expanding the domestic supply of strategic basic chemicals while building a more integrated, competitive, and sustainable industrial ecosystem.

SAIL, Krakatau Steel plan $350 million investment in stainless steel plant​

NEW DELHI, July 29 (Reuters) - India's state-run Steel Authority of India (SAIL.NS), opens new tab and Indonesia's Krakatau Steel (KRAS.JK), opens new tab plan to invest as much as $350 million in a stainless steel slab plant in Indonesia, two Indian sources familiar with the matter said this week.

The plant ‌will have an annual capacity of 500,000 metric tons and is expected to be operational within the next three to four years, the sources said.

Earlier this month, SAIL and Krakatau Steel signed a preliminary agreement to form a joint venture to produce stainless steel slabs in Indonesia during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the country.

SAIL plans to send a technical team to Indonesia next month to prepare ⁠a feasibility report, after which the two companies will finalise the equity structure of the joint venture, the timeline for government approvals and other details, the sources said.

The sources declined to be identified because the deliberations are not public. SAIL did not respond to a Reuters email seeking comment sent on Monday. Krakatau Steel did not respond to a request for comment made on Tuesday.

The proposed plant's capacity could be expanded after it becomes operational, the sources said.

Tying up with Krakatau Steel would help SAIL source cheaper nickel, a key raw material in stainless steel production, one of the sources said.

Indonesia is home to more than 50% of global nickel ‌production.
SAIL will ⁠consume the entire output of the planned Indonesian facility and bring the stainless steel slabs to its Salem plant for rolling and finishing, the second source said.

SAIL's Salem plant is in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The state-run steelmaker will primarily supply the finished products to Indian customers, while a small percentage could be exported to the Middle East ⁠and Europe, the sources said.

SAIL was India's third-largest steel producer in the fiscal year to March 2025, with a 10.1% share of the domestic market, according to commodities consultancy BigMint.

India, the world's largest crude steel producer after China, has identified Indonesia ⁠and more than a dozen other countries for cooperation in the steel sector to boost exports and secure key raw materials.

Finished steel consumption in India has risen 55% over the past five years, outpacing the 42% ⁠increase in production, BigMint data showed.
Indian steelmakers are pivoting to the domestic market to offset weaker exports as Europe and Britain tighten imports, but competition from Chinese steel is blunting that strategy.

BUMI to Convert 7.7 Million Tons of Low-Calorie Coal into Methanol​

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – PT Bumi Etam Chemical (BEC), a joint venture between PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) and PT Arutmin Indonesia, will use low-calorie coal as the primary feedstock for its coal gasification project to produce methanol.

In the project's first phase, it is expected to consume approximately 7.7 million tons of coal annually to produce 2 million tons of methanol per year.

BEC President Director Rio Supin said the project will use low-calorie coal with an energy value of approximately 3,300 kcal/kg. According to him, converting low-calorie coal into methanol is part of the company's effort to increase the added value of Indonesia's mining commodities through downstream industrialization.

"In this project, we plan to use low-calorie coal with an energy content of approximately 3,300 kcal/kg. The project is expected to require an investment of more than US$2.3 billion. This estimate is based on the bankable feasibility study that we completed in 2025," Rio said during the signing ceremony of the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract and the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPCC) Framework Agreement for the coal gasification-to-methanol project in Jakarta on Wednesday (July 29, 2026).

He explained that before entering the gasification process, the coal will first undergo coal drying because of its relatively high moisture content.

The dried coal will then be converted into synthesis gas (syngas), which will be purified before proceeding through the methanol synthesis and methanol distillation stages to produce methanol.

Rio also noted that the methanol produced will comply with the international standards of the International Methanol Producers and Consumers Association (IMPCA) rather than China's GB standards. This approach is intended to ensure that the final product meets the quality requirements of the global market.

"In our engineering study, we requested that the methanol grade comply with international standards rather than China's GB standards. The project site is strategically located on the coast of the Makassar Strait, which will facilitate both domestic distribution and future marketing of the methanol," he said.

In addition to methanol, the project will also produce sulfuric acid as a by-product.

The entire complex will be built as an integrated facility, including a power plant and a water treatment plant required to support both the gasification and methanol synthesis processes.

"The power plant is extremely important because it will not only generate electricity for the project but also produce the steam required for both the gasification process and methanol synthesis," he explained.

As previously reported, the coal-to-methanol downstream project being developed by subsidiaries of PT Bumi Resources Tbk (BUMI)—namely PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) and PT Arutmin Indonesia—has now entered a new phase.

Through their joint venture, PT Bumi Etam Chemical (BEC), the National Strategic Project (PSN) for coal gasification into methanol (Coal-to-Methanol) has officially entered the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage and the preparation of the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPCC) Framework Agreement.

The FEED contract and EPCC Framework Agreement were signed by BEC, PT Istana Karang Laut (IKL), and China National Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNCEC) at the Ballroom of The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Mega Kuningan, on Wednesday (July 29, 2026).

Coal Downstream Processing into Methanol Projected to Generate Higher Returns Than DME​

Coal-derived syngas (synthetic gas) can be widely utilized as a primary feedstock for the chemical and petrochemical industries.

It serves as a key raw material for the production of ammonia, urea, and formic acid, reducing reliance on natural gas.

"Syngas can also be further processed into dimethyl ether (DME), which can be used as an alternative fuel to substitute household LPG," he said.

Compared with DME, however, coal downstream products in the form of syngas and methanol have made significantly greater progress.

Syngas, as a flexible intermediate product, has also begun attracting interest from global investors.

One example is Danantara, through PT Danantara Development Management Fund, which has entered into a partnership with U.S.-based technology company Latitude Energy.

Joy M. Sakurai, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, welcomed the collaboration following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

"Trade and investment relations between the United States and Indonesia have tremendous potential. Advanced U.S. energy technologies can support energy security, industrial growth, and long-term economic prosperity for both countries," Sakurai said in an official statement on Friday (July 10, 2026).

The collaboration is expected to strengthen Indonesia's energy security while reducing gas imports through the deployment of Transport Integrated Gasification (TRIG), an advanced coal-conversion technology described as one of the world's most advanced gasification processes.

As one of the world's largest coal producers, Indonesia possesses abundant reserves of low-rank coal.

Through downstream processing using TRIG technology, these low-calorific coal reserves can be converted into high-value syngas to supply domestic industrial demand.

Latest Project​

The latest coal-to-methanol downstream project is being developed by PT Bumi Etam Chemical (BEC), a joint venture between PT Arutmin Indonesia and PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC).

BEC President Director Rio Supin said the company's primary objective is to replace Indonesia's methanol imports.

"Our main objective from the beginning has been import substitution. Domestic methanol consumers require reliable supply, so our primary focus is the domestic market," Rio said after the signing of the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract and the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPCC) Framework Agreement on Wednesday (July 29, 2026).

Regarding demand from Indonesia's B50 biodiesel program, Rio said the company has already signed several Letters of Agreement (LoAs) with prospective buyers.

"The largest methanol consumers today are in the biodiesel industry. Producers of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) are therefore our primary target, and we have already signed several LoAs for future cooperation," he said.

Methanol is a critical feedstock for the B50 biodiesel mandate, where it is used to convert palm oil into FAME, which is then blended with diesel fuel.

The project's first phase is designed to produce 2 million tonnes of methanol annually, together with sulfuric acid as a by-product.

Over time, KPC and Arutmin plan to expand production capacity to 3.6 million tonnes per year.

To support both the gasification process and power generation, the project will require approximately 7.7 million tonnes of coal annually.

The company plans to use low-rank coal with a calorific value of approximately 3,300 kcal/kg GAR as its primary feedstock.

Bakrie Group-Listed Company Showcases Strong Performance​

JAKARTA, investor.id – PT Bakrie & Brothers Tbk (BNBR) recorded stronger performance in the first half of 2026, with net revenue reaching Rp2.59 trillion. The figure increased by Rp814.69 billion, or 45.8%, compared with Rp1.77 trillion in the same period last year.

Bakrie & Brothers’ revenue growth was accompanied by a 283.2% surge in operating profit to Rp301.5 billion. In the first half of the previous year, the Bakrie Group-listed company recorded operating profit of only Rp78.6 billion.

The company, which trades under the ticker BNBR, also booked positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of Rp423 billion. This represented an increase of Rp295.2 billion, or 230.9%, from Rp127.8 billion in the same period last year.

BNBR President Director & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Anindya N. Bakrie said the growth was achieved while the global economy continued to face considerable uncertainty.

“Bakrie & Brothers was able to record positive growth amid persistent uncertainty and volatile global economic conditions. This is tangible evidence that the strategy, resilience, adaptability, and hard work of the entire team are beginning to deliver results,” Anindya said in a statement on Friday (28 August 2026).

Anindya explained that BNBR’s Rp814.69 billion increase in revenue was primarily supported by improved performance across several business units. The largest contributor to the growth was PT Bakrie Indo Infrastructure (BIIN).

BIIN Group’s revenue surged by Rp450.7 billion, or 256.1%, to Rp626.7 billion in the first half of 2026. In the same period last year, the business unit generated revenue of Rp176 billion.

The surge primarily resulted from the full consolidation of PT Cimanggis Cibitung Tollways (CCT) in 2026.



PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas Tbk (VKTR) also contributed to the growth. VKTR Group’s revenue increased by Rp232.5 billion, or 56.2%, to Rp646.6 billion, compared with Rp414 billion in the same period last year.

VKTR’s improved performance was driven by growth in electric vehicle (EV) sales as well as increased sales at PT Bakrie Autoparts (BA).

Meanwhile, PT Bakrie Metal Industries (BMI) recorded net revenue of Rp1.3 trillion, an increase of Rp120.9 billion, or 10.2%, from Rp1.18 trillion in the first half of the previous year.

BMI’s growth was supported by a 37.5% increase in revenue at BMI Parent, 33.6% growth at PT Bakrie Construction (Bcons), and a 15.1% increase at PT Southeast Asia Pipe Industries (SEAPI).

Corporate Actions and Expansion​

BNBR Vice President Director & Co-Chief Executive Officer (Co-CEO) A. Ardiansyah Bakrie said the company had also completed the issuance of new shares through a capital increase with pre-emptive rights (PMHMETD), or a rights issue, at the end of July 2026.

Through the corporate action, BNBR successfully raised Rp4.76 trillion.

Ardiansyah said several BNBR business units also recorded performance improvements during the first six months of 2026, in line with the increase in the company’s consolidated revenue.

BNBR Director Roy Hendrajanto M. Sakti added that the company views its increasingly strong financial structure as a foundation for developing its strategic infrastructure portfolio. The portfolio includes toll roads as well as pipeline networks for oil and gas transportation.

BNBR is also continuing its expansion into future-oriented industries, including transportation electrification and sustainable energy. The company is optimistic that the strategy can support sustainable growth, create added value for shareholders, and contribute to national development.

Despite increases in revenue, operating profit, and EBITDA, BNBR recorded a decline in net profit. Roy explained that the decline was primarily influenced by an external factor: an increase in the floating rate affecting CCT’s interest expenses.

“Bakrie & Brothers recorded a decline in net profit, primarily due to the external impact of higher floating rates on CCT’s interest expenses, particularly during the initial years following the acquisition, when the interest-expense component remains relatively high,” Roy concluded.

Industry Ministry Confident in Strong Growth Prospects for Indonesia’s Cosmetics Industry​

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) believes the country’s cosmetics industry has strong long-term growth prospects, supported by a large domestic market and steadily rising consumer demand.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the cosmetics sector remains one of Indonesia’s most promising industries, driven by continued market expansion and increasing consumer spending.

According to Agus, the growing number of industry players must be accompanied by improvements in product quality, innovation, and a stronger industrial ecosystem.

“With the increasing number of businesses in the sector, we hope the cosmetics industry will not only meet domestic consumer demand but also expand its contribution to exports and national economic growth,” Agus said.

According to data from Indonesia’s National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM), the number of domestic cosmetics manufacturers increased from 1,292 companies in 2024 to more than 1,500 companies by the end of 2025.

Approximately 90% of these companies are classified as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The industry’s export performance also improved significantly. Cosmetics exports increased from $417 million USD in 2024 to $473.8 million USD in 2025, representing growth of approximately 13.6% year-on-year.

Despite the sector’s positive momentum, Agus noted that many SME cosmetics producers continue to face various challenges. As a result, stronger collaboration across government agencies, industry associations, universities, and private-sector stakeholders is needed to strengthen Indonesia’s cosmetics ecosystem.

“The challenges faced by SME cosmetics producers require collaborative solutions. The central and regional governments, industry associations, academics, large corporations, and the public all have important roles in building an interconnected ecosystem that benefits all parties,” he said.

As part of these efforts, the Ministry’s Directorate General of Small, Medium, and Miscellaneous Industries (Ditjen IKMA) has partnered with the Perhimpunan Perusahaan Kosmetika Indonesia (Perkosmi) to strengthen supply chains and expand the use of domestic raw materials.

According to the Ministry, industry partnerships can significantly improve the competitiveness of SME cosmetics producers by providing:

• Easier access to raw materials and supporting materials
• Expanded distribution and marketing channels
• Opportunities to become part of larger industrial supply chains

Director General of IKMA Reni Yanita explained that cosmetics industry development is being supported through multi-stakeholder collaboration involving local governments, industry associations, BPOM, universities, e-commerce platforms, retailers, and large manufacturers.

As part of this initiative, Ditjen IKMA organized a pre-business matching event titled “Local Supply Chain for Cosmetic Industry” at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta, from May 6–8, 2026.

The event serves as a preparatory stage for a larger business matching program scheduled for September 2026 and is part of a broader exhibition initiative organized by Perkosmi.

The Ministry believes that strengthening domestic supply chains, expanding partnerships, and improving access to markets and financing will help position Indonesia’s cosmetics industry for sustained growth in both domestic and international markets.
