Why the World Looks Like the World Today? - Wang Gungwu
Well oddly enough i had a long discussion with ChatGPT about what he was talking about in the first 20 seconds of the video just a few days ago. My claim (and ChatGPT agreed) was that the US under capitalistic greed (or capitalist consumer egalitarianism) has inadvertently created a large scale socialist success story that is unique in the history of the world.
By that I mean a person shopping in a supermarket in Maine is likely to buy the exact same fruits/vegetables grown in the same general area as somebody over
4000 kilometers away in Southern California for approximately the same price. The US is unique in that most of our food supply is not grown in areas surrounding our population centers. It is grown far away and shipped to all corners by train/truck. This leads to unprecedented food equality for 340 Million people.
But it doesn’t end there…
The medicines they will use will be exactly the same…and priced similarly
The consumer products they see on shelves will be exactly the same.…and priced similarly
The clothes they see in stores will be exactly the same.…and priced similarly
The stuff to improve your homes will be the same.…and priced similarly
It’s the same societal equality Socialism wants to achieve..but done by greedy capitalists.
It doesn’t even end there. I’m currently on a trip to Europe visiting Rome/Paris/Barcelona and guess what…some of the same stuff applies.
My iPhone works perfectly in Europe…I didn’t even need to do an eSIM. I can call my kids US phone numbers while we are all walking around in a Rome museum to tell them to check out a statue. I can walk into a local corner store and buy (using ApplePay) the same Coke Zero, Oreos, and Colgate toothpaste as some hillybilly in a small town in Arkansas. That’s WAY WAY WAY more world socialism/equality than any single Government can provide.
Capitalism (and I’m going to specifically say
US led) in its pursuit of profit, has unintentionally delivered a kind of global egalitarianism that no ideology has ever achieved.
