India’s Bumrah sidelined, Shami returns for England T20 series

India’s injured quick Jasprit Bumrah will miss the five-match T20 international series with England, while Mohammad Shami has returned to the squad after more than a year out with an ankle injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday.

Bumrah, the highest wicket-taker in the recent test series with Australia which India lost 3-1, had back spasms during the final test in Sydney, which forced him out of the match midway.

Seamer Shami, who had surgery on his injured ankle, is back for the first time since the 50-over World Cup final in November 2023 where hosts India lost to Australia.

Rishabh Pant is another notable absence, with Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel the two wicketkeepers named in the squad.

India host England in the first T20 on January 22, with the series concluding on February 12 with a three-match one-day series to follow before next month’s Champions Trophy.

Bangladesh has become the first Asian team to announce their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, naming a 15-member team led by Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Veteran all-rounder and former captain Shakib Al Hasan has been excluded from the squad.

His omission comes after he failed a second bowling action test last month at England’s Loughborough University. This led to a ban on his bowling in both domestic and international cricket.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had been considering his inclusion until the failed test. Shakib’s absence leaves a significant gap in the team, but Shanto, a rising star, will captain the side in the prestigious tournament.

The Champions Trophy begins next month, with Bangladesh aiming to make a strong impact under their new captain.

New Zealand have unveiled their 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, marking Mitchell Santner’s debut as skipper in a major ICC event.

Santner, who has enjoyed recent success as New Zealand’s white-ball captain in ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka, will lead a squad blending seasoned players with fresh talent.

Santner will lead the spin department with support from versatile all-rounders Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra. Batting depth is provided by Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, and Will Young, ensuring the team has balance across disciplines.

The squad reflects a strategic mix of experience and new talent, with the management eyeing a strong performance in the Champions Trophy. Williamson, who also played in the 2013 edition in England, and Latham will aim to guide younger players in high-pressure situations.

New Zealand’s group-stage fixtures promise intense matchups. After facing Pakistan in Karachi, the Black Caps will take on Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on 24 February, followed by a high-profile clash with India in Dubai on 2 March.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 offers New Zealand a chance to solidify their status as one of the top sides in world cricket, with hopes of claiming their first title in this tournament’s history.

New Zealand Squad:

Mitchell Santner (c), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith, Kane Williamson, Will Young.

KABUL: Afghanistan announced their squad Sunday for next month’s Champions Trophy, with prolific opener Ibrahim Zadran returning after an injury lay-off but spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman missing out.

The country’s performance in white-ball cricket has been strong recently – finishing sixth in the 50-over World Cup in 2023 and reaching the semi-final in last year’s Twenty20 World Cup.

This will be the first time Afghanistan participate in the eight-nation Champions Trophy, staged between February 19 and March 9 in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

“Zadran, who was away from action due to an ankle injury, has returned to the squad,” said a statement from the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB).

“However, Mujeeb Ur Rahman misses out on the selection, as AM Ghazanfar, a similar mystery spinner, has made the cut for the mega event.”

Rahman was left out because “he has been advised by his doctor to focus on T20s for a while to ensure his full recovery”, added acting ACB chief selector Ahmad Suliman Khil.

But fast-rising opener Sediqullah Atal did secure a place in the squad, the ACB said.

Afghanistan beat England and Pakistan in the ODI World Cup and Australia and New Zealand in the T20 World Cup.

Their Champions Trophy campaign begins with a clash against South Africa in Karachi on February 21, before they face England and Australia in Lahore.

Squad:
Hashmatullah Shahidi (capt), Rahmat Shah (vice-capt), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ikram Alikhil (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, AM Ghazanfar, Noor Ahmad, Fazal Haq Farooqi, Naveed Zadran and Farid Ahmad Malik.

Netflix’s cricket documentary The Greatest Rivalry: India vs Pakistan is releasing Feb 7

We're ready for this one!

Netflix just announced the release date of its cricket documentary The Greatest Rivalry: India vs Pakistan and fans can’t wait.

The sports documentary will release on February 7 on the streaming platform.

The poster for the documentary features Indian stars Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag with their backs to the camera, heading towards the pitch where the Pakistan team celebrates.

There are no names visible for the Pakistani players, but you can spot numbers — 96, 13 and some numbers in the 50s.

Last February, Netflix released a short teaser for the documentary, featuring some fiery rivalry but told us nothing more.

The Netflix website currently features a short promo for the documentary, including interviews with Waqar Younis, Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly talking about spin bowling.

The comment section of the Instagram announcement was heated, with fans cheering on their own teams and talking about what they hoped the documentary would hold. Despite commonly expressed fears, it seems that this is simply a documentary on the sport and the two teams, not a fictionalised version of events à la patriotic Indian filmmakers.
