He remembers Khomeini refusing to accept the intial ceasefire agreement 5 months afree Iran-Iraq war started. It only lead to 8 more years of war and 200,000+ killed.

Khomeini ended up accepting the same terms. Khamenai remembers and that has shaped his view of conflict.

Khamenai has max 10 more years, there must be some religious hardliners or nationalist in power in Iran that wants the safety and power that comes with being a nuclear power? if Iranian truly wants to be a country with independent foreign policy then they need to push for this.
