That is precisely because Russian tactics involve send 3 men (they die) send 3 more (they die) send 10 more (they die) send 15 more. And this is the Russian mindset, that if you keep throwing meat at lead eventually the Ukrainians will run out of drones and lead and the Russians will make progress.

This is a case of friendly fire and the F-15Es were on a pattern for base. So they turned down(not off) their EW and other systems under the assumption they are approaching home base.

This happened to the Superhornet shootdown as well in the earlier engagement. The jets are slowing down, low on fuel so basically they are both not expecting this and also sitting ducks.

That was the first years of war. Since then drones have left many parts of the frontlines abandoned. Drones patrol the frontlines with land drones too. It is a no man's land if you go to the frontlines, a drone is ready to drop a bomb on you.
