I always thought it was stupid to employ the F-35 in a CAS role given its limited weapons capability compared to say an F-18. Nor can it loiter like the A-10. To mount additional ordnance under the wings means you give up stealth capability

As for boots about to be or currently on the ground? Your guess is as good as anyone else. If I knew for a fact there were already boots on the ground, I sure as hell wouldn't mention it here.

The A-10 will eventually go away. The Air Force hasn't given up on that.

As Marine F/A-18s are replaced by the F-35, CAS for the BLTs and other ground units will come eventually from the F-35.

In the meantime, the A-10 is simply awesome when you need something to look like Swiss Cheese.
