At a time when questions have been raised on the credibility of Pakistan in facilitating peace talks between Iran and the US, Russia pitched for India as a potential long-term mediator in the conflict. Addressing a media briefing after the BRICS foreign ministers' meeting in Delhi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasised that India's vast diplomatic experience could also be used to bridge the gap between Iran and its "Arab friends".
"Pakistan is helping establish dialogues between the US and Iran to resolve urgent problems. If they seek a long-term mediator, this role could be played by India, considering its vast diplomatic experience," Lavrov said.
US-IRAN WAR AND PAKISTAN ROLE
The remark comes at a time when Pakistan's role as a supposedly neutral mediator in the US-Iran war has shown cracks.
Questions have also been raised about Pakistan possibly playing a double game after it quietly allowed Iranian military aircraft to park at its Nur Khan air base, possibly shielding them from American airstrikes.
Moreover, Pakistan has also opened six overland transit routes to Iran to help Tehran move emergency cargo and bypass the US-led naval blockade of Iranian ports.
All of this has led to major distrust in the US administration. Earlier this week, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham questioned whether Pakistan could be trusted as a mediator.
"I don't trust Pakistan as far as I can throw them... If they actually do have Iranian aircraft parked in Pakistan bases, that tells me we should be looking maybe for somebody else to mediate," Graham said.
While Islamabad hosted the first round of talks in April after the US and Iran agreed to a ceasefire, it has failed to bring the two sides to the negotiating table again. US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's latest peace proposal and recently stressed that the Pakistan-brokered ceasefire was on "life support".
At his briefing, Lavrov underscored the importance of long-term stability in the region, a key energy hub.
He said that India, as the current BRICS chair and having direct interests in regional stability, could help bring key stakeholders together for talks.
"India is directly interested in receiving oil from this region. Why won't they offer their services? They could invite Iran, the United Arab Emirates, to start with, to have a conversation with each other to agree on how they can avoid any hostilities between the two countries," Lavrov said.

I will offer a slightly different perspective, I noted that both Iran and Russia used wording suggesting India has scope to be more productive and involved, that is a diplomatic way of saying saying you could do more and have done nothing so far, this moreso carries weight in the brics context
Once again the main deception comes from India unwilling to publicize it's Israel closeness too much, because in a way India is the one nation Israel would trust , Pakistan works between us and Iran but it does not work with Israel.
But Indian knows it cannot propose or push for peace to Israel without offending Israel, they don't want it to be known that they actually could have a role and they don't want it to be known they have no leverage.

I hope that Indians would continue their work in Chabahar port so it would be fully developed at the service of the interests of India and other countries around. I think India, with its good reputation, can play a greater role in this region to help diplomacy and to promote peace and security. India is a friend to all countries in the Persian Gulf... No harm in economic co-operation that benefits Iran. At the end of the day, Iran has its own calculations both economically, strategically and politically.
Iran does look at India through rose tinted glasses for sure(which most people here do not understand at all), but that is their mistake to make as sovereign.

Will Iran actually accept India as a mediator right now given that India and Israel are now married as mother and father and now that the b-stard child of UAE has signed a strategic agreement with the UAE ?
That would be an interesting question.
Also, how would Iran's support from China be affected if Iran agrees on a change to India? It was China who "convinced/pushed" Pakistan to play a mediator role alongside the USA as well.

Will all parties sign a ceasefire agreement?
This doesn't make sense. They will not achieve a real ceasefire.
Trump originally intended to compel Iran to yield—agreeing to U.S. terms and signing a ceasefire agreement—before proceeding with his visit to China. He sought to leverage this achievement to exert pressure on China and secure greater concessions.
However, he failed to accomplish this objective. Consequently, his recent visit to China yielded no tangible results.
According to reports from other media outlets (though neither the U.S. nor Chinese government has officially confirmed this), President Xi is scheduled to pay a return visit to the United States this coming September.
If these reports prove accurate, and if Trump remains unable to force Iran into submission prior to President Xi's visit, the Trump administration will completely lose its negotiating leverage in its dealings with President Xi.
Therefore, in my analysis, the Trump administration's pressure campaign against Iran will intensify in the period ahead.

I don't think that they would dismiss it, and that in itself speaks volumes.
But actually what we are talking about is communication and not mediation, unfortunately the Indian media has totally poisoned and made the word mediation loaded.
The main enemies of Iran are USA Israel and UAE
Pakistan works for USA and India would work for the other two, it would actually make a lot of sense for India to push themselves into the role because then they would have less economic disruption
The actual issue is India will not present any peace terms to a determined war hungry Israel so they know they will be embarrassed.
That is the crux, India is following Israel's position, remember they did not condemn the girls school, the death of the ayatollah and then the navy ship
My only plausible defense for Iran is this was a brics summit and India was host so in that context you probably have to be nice and talk about regional connectivity issues
It's just generally surprising that Iran manages to ignore so much

Pakistan is fully transitioning to the Chinese camp albeit very carefully as to not draw the American attention too much...Now almost 90% of our military hardware is Chinese and we are not stopping any time soon, with the acquisition of J35 and other high tech weapons from China, Pakistan is now fully committed to Chinese interests as decoupling will never be possible in the future, we have been Iron brothers with China since our inception but now our survival depends on it so to answer your questions, Yes Pakistan will act as a bridge for China wherever possible and will work for Chinese interests
