U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen urged Congress to pass a War Powers Resolution requiring the withdrawal of U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran, warning the current ceasefire remains “tenuous” despite the recently signed U.S.-Iran memorandum.

"Trump & Netanyahu's Iran War has been a disaster from the start. The question now is not whether the deal to end this war is perfect but whether continuing the war would make things better. It would not."

He denounced “military adventurism,” “promises of quick victory,” and “fantasies of regime change,” arguing the U.S. should pursue diplomacy instead of risking more lives and billions of taxpayer dollars on continued war.

Well, as someone who was very skeptical of him before, and viewed him as a hardcore, irredeemable militant (due to his previous leadership roles in AQI, ISIS and Al Nusra); I think my opinion of him has shifted a bit.

This is my new view of him.

I think he wants to be in Trump’s good books. I also think he is “controlled” by the Turks.

He knows that Syria faces many challenges, economic, political and security related. His country has issues of territorial integrity, with the Israelis occupying large swathes of south western Syria; and then challenges from the SDF as well. Despite trying to be in Trump’s good books, Syria economically is still in dire straits.

In this situation, it would be very difficult starting a direct military conflict against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran might have also opened up some unofficial channels with Syria via Turkey, to smuggle some arms into Lebanon (Hezbollah) via Syria in exchange of Iranian money (or other arrangements).

So my updated view is that he on a personal level might not be the ideologue that I thought he was, which is a good thing. Some people who work under him in his regime might be repressive within their own country, but for now, he personally seems to be in control in Syria.

He is most definitely an opportunist, but in politics, I think you expect opportunism as a norm from everyone. It’s just the nature of politics. It will be interesting to see what role he plays if Trump convinces him to tackle Hezbollah, and asks Israel to wind down its operations in Lebanon.

I think he’s trying to do the best he can for Syria and not get involved into a sectarian or regional conflict. They destroyed the Syrian military when Assad fled. If Iran can build trust with his government which will keep the murderous Takfiris on a leash, Syria can once again play an important part. The Assads were quasi Christians out in place by the French. They had to go. Ruling over a Sunni country. Wish Iran didn’t get involved in the civil war but you get sucked in regional war quite easily. Best thing would’ve been to leave quietly back in 2011 and made sure the new Syrian government would inherently be pro Iran and it would still retain its military capabilities which were heavily degraded in the civil war. Letting in form of nasty Takfiris to not only k*ll Shias but also many Sunnis made things worse
