A few thousand is not going to do anything. A division (10,000+ men) is usually able to man a 35km frontline. They either need a full expeditionary force or a local force to be able to pull that off.

The logistics of that would be enormous, and that's even if Pakistan and Afghanistan agree to be used as launch pads. You can't feed a force like that on a sea base assault.
