India's decade-long bet on Iran's Chabahar port - a strategic gateway to Afghanistan and Central Asia that bypasses Pakistan - has collided with Washington's sanctions regime.

Since signing a development deal in 2016, Delhi has viewed the port as a cornerstone of its regional connectivity strategy and a rare overland corridor into landlocked Afghanistan and beyond.

In recent years, India has used the port to ship wheat and humanitarian supplies to Afghanistan while investing in the development of the port's Shahid Beheshti terminal.

But that strategy became precarious after the US revoked a longstanding sanctions waiver in September 2025 as part of renewed pressure on Iran.

In a diplomatic reprieve, Washington later granted India a conditional six-month waiver, allowing operations at the terminal to continue until 26 April 2026 while negotiations continue. The arrangement provides breathing space - but little certainty.

The war has complicated matters.

For now, caution prevails.

Only once tensions around Iran ease will India be able to revisit Chabahar with confidence. As long as the Washington-Tehran confrontation persists, Delhi's engagement with the port is likely to remain limited by practical and operational constraints, according to Pant.

India wants to be in US led Western camp and have good relation with Trump, and Israel is the key to good relation with Washington. Besides, Israel supplies many advanced weapons and military tech to India, and maybe the only supplier India can get in many cases. What can Iran offer to India ? Chabahar Port, not really critical and urgent; oil, India can get from other suppliers and has stopped buying from Iran under US pressure. In other words Israel is indispensable for India while Iran is not. Also, Iran is a Muslim country now, that's another negative point for Modi. India has no guts to go against US and Israel.

If Iran in the coming days or weeks runs out of missiles, drones, they might as well have to entrench themselves.

Regime change will be a next to an impossible task for the US and Israelis.

Following as the situation evolves is fine. What you're suggesting however is not likely to happen. The votes aren't there and the Vice President certainly isn't going to turn his back on his boss.

I'm not convinced we have any leaders capable of de-escalation. Who do you have in mind? Every last one of them I wouldn't trust to run a street corner hot dog cart (corndog for @RescueRanger ) much less de-escalate a war.

After the recent vote on war authorization, we can throw that idea out the window.

But, Iran is unlikely to become enemy of Pakistan just for the sake of friendship with India. Iran might cosy up to India but it won't be foolish to form an alliance with India against Pakistan. Iran doesn't want Pakistan to be enemy unless the two countries end up that way somehow then Iran will form an alliance with India.

I am truly surprised that india did not even condemn the invasion of its strategic ally iran.. they purposely chose not to condemn unlike joint statement with the rest of the shanghai cooperation org.

Indian has aligned itself with the Israeli. They think they are blood brothers. Iran needs to log and realise what India is.

Iran needs to understand that India is and has been buddy of Israel since very long ( in arab isreal war Indians were there on Israeli soil to fight against Arabs like Pakistani soldiers were there on arab soil to fight Israel) and a friend of Israel can't be their friend at same time.
They need to understand Pakistan is more sincere to them for their future than Indians..
India only need Iran to use as proxy against Pakistan and unfortunately, they have been used as proxy by india , Rawa has established network in Iran and as used Irani soil against Pakistan ...
Even after all this current saga Iran consider India as their friend then we can't help them for their doom.. Can't they as their best buddy India to ask its best buddy Israel to avoid attack ...

I think before the china truce between Saudi and Iran. Iran saw Pakistan as Saudi ally so generally teamed up with India as convenience against Pakistan.

Yes, I would say Iran and Pakistan didn't have very good relation because of difference of religious sects, but they were not enemies.
