A few decades ago, when oil prices were below $30/barrel I remember reading stories that the Arabs were deliberately preventing US oil production. At that price it wasn’t viable to produce in the US. The non-stop US attacks on Muslim countries forced oil prices up and allowed the US to become self sufficient. It didn’t matter that every US citizen was now paying a higher price.

Obviously, there’s a sweet spot for oil prices. High enough for investment and higher production and profits, but below the threshold where the unwashed masses will revolt.

There is a reason why oil was naturally staying low in price even with sanctions on producers.
Because the global demand is low...
The oil prices going up right now are detrimental to growth or economic stability for many states. In fact... due to high inflation in US in the recent years coupled with a tough jobs market and housing crisis. It will lead to further stagnation... while the revenues do help explore more fields or pay dividends they do not help improve overall economy because they become a drain on overall prospects. Since Feds policy of fiscal tightening had taken removed liquidity from the markets... it will hurt an average person more than what it does during QE... which isn't possible right now... as I said the inflation is already high and fed is most likely not going to cut rates in next couple of sessions.
It will be a burden... a war tax on everyone who did not sign up for this...
