It seems there are reports that the United States is contacting intermediaries to pass messages, but Iran is making demands, saying it will only negotiate if there's a complete troop withdrawal.

A few things...
US would want to a return to gulf bases. Resupply. Look for fissures and weakness in Iranian reply. Any weakness will reinforce the belief that they may have a chance still.

All are detrimental to what Iran has reached thus far... and without any tangibles it would be an utter loss. Remember the one paying the price determines how much they're looking to extract out of it...
