As I admire bravery being in open areas and not in particular hiding, figures of such high profile have also high responsibility to wage war and lead country at the same time and you can not them replace on as on conveyer belt and give enemy easy satisfaction and scoring points.

Was his estimated position hit in a bunker or residence. If it was a secret bunker then other members of the council are in danger too and how it was done needs to be uncovered to not to repeat it. If it was residence Iran may thought that even in war they wont kill negotiators or speakers and demanded the same from the other side and this assumption is a fatal mistake.

This shows that it is a fight for survival and enemy is for total annihilation of Iran and usa negotiation attempts are ploy.
