If Zarif had done even 10% of what he did in Iran in any other decent country with the rule of law, he would've been jailed for years.

This seems spot on. US mixed signals emerging haphazardly makes it very clear that Trump's handlers in Tel Aviv are outraged at his actions over the last 48 hours. Trump simply wanted out as soon as possible.

There is some scrambling now to control the damage caused by the apparent discordance between Washington and Tel Aviv.

As you said, it boils down to US being unwilling and/or unable to control Tel Aviv, while Tel Aviv can still pull levers on Washington.

UAE (and Israel if possible) needs to be wrecked while there is time to do so, since USA may turn the other cheek for about 48 hours or so.

Well then So is Trump according to Epstein files and half of Congress...
Even then you get what the point of view of what they thinking.. if he is one of them then they probably think alike .. still you learn...
When a crime is being investigated you look at every aspect every angle and you talk to everyone to get the lead until you get the breakthrough.. just because someone is criminal doesn't mean you shut down completely... The problem in this case is War on Iran have nothing to do with kid's in this case... However listening to him and getting a insight and setting a policy to save lives of kids in Iran at the present is not a crime...

in my speculative opinion, there's real teeth to the desire to avoid the economic fallout of escalating the strikes, and that has gone beyond Trump to "higher powers" and so he's been cleared to pursue de-escalation

however, that doesn't mean they are planning to stop the pursuit of permanently neutering the Iranian nation, but they are simply going to re-collect and resume when it suits them to do so

frankly speaking imo, this goes for all of us in the region seeking "peace": i agree with Putin that, at least in our current world, "peace is a lie'. We should just be seeking out victory whether by elimination or attrition.
