Both depleted oil reservoirs and depleted carbonate rock caves can store crude oil.

In 2017, China National Petroleum Corporation released a public report on Iran's emergency oil storage, stating that even with only nine abandoned oil fields, including Masjid-e Suleiman, Naft Shah, 34 billion barrels of oil could be stored.

Iran has hundreds of abandoned oil fields and salt caverns.
