We had a recent President who said something similar. Yet, a bunch of barefoot, cave-dwelling, 7th Century throwbacks with filthy beards wearing dirty nightshirts carrying AKs managed to outlast the might of not just the US but the much hyped Soviet Red Army.

I made a note to myself to start carrying my AK instead of the AR.

It is a relic from an era where there were no standing armies and each state was supposed to have it's own militia to deal with situations. Nowadays with regular army and police, it is even more pointless.

That's only because American meathead generals never read history books and are obsessed with wonderwaffens and "winning battles". They should have internalized the saying "you cannot buy an Afghan , but you can rent him". The whole approach should have been different.
