The problem is that this is another low for our deterrence.

If a country like Ukraine which is hardly even a middle power can target our civilian vessels and kill an Iranian national, even accepts responsibility and boasts about it without even apologizing to us, and doesn't even pay a penny to us, then we have no deterrence and we're really at the mercy of other countries in the world.

But anybody with half a brain understand this is unsustainable. They gonna forver keep their navy and air force busy running around there trying to intercept some missiles/drones? Is that even affordable or sustainable?

Geography has given Iran a huge advantage and the decimation of many regional American bases have made it much more difficult to wage a war on Iran. Iran's priority should be to do whatever to make the American fleet leave--and they will have to leave now or later--and then the Strait will be Iran's. It already is de facto.
