I would argue that the cost Pakistan paid for becoming nuclear was less than Iran did for not having a nuclear bomb and their little dance. I think the saving grace was that it was done under the Indian umbrella, so diplomatically there was only so much they could throw at Pakistan in that scenario.

The best thing Pakistan did was getting the nuclear bomb.

As corrupt and dirty as Pakistani leadership is/was - there was unanimity about getting the bomb at any cost.

Alas! No such consensus in Iran. And is why they are under siege.

After 30 years, Iran could not build even a single nuclear reactor on its own. Our only active nuclear reactor is an old Russian reactor with Siemens parts from the Shah era that produces only 950 MW and we haven't been able to produce the nuclear fuel for operating that single reactor for just 12 months after 30 years.

That’s basically how Iran has operated for last 250 years regardless of its form of governance (Monarchy or Theocracy or Democracy).

Iran isn’t a world power and thus has to balance the world powers against each other. The only difference in 21st century is that China is another foreign power Iran has to balance.

In 30 years, Iran spent over 200 billion on the nuclear program directly, regardless of all other costs.

Multiple large enrichment facilities created tens of meters under mountains with reinforced concrete, advanced centrifuge assembly centers, IR-40 heavy water reactor that was abandoned, two large uranium mines and uranium processing facilities, uranium metal conversion facility, heavy water production, tens of thousands of centrifuges that consume hundreds of megawatts of electricity, plus 24 years of sanctions that has reduced Iran's GDP from a projected 1 trillion USD in 2025 to a quarter of that.

Iran's GDP in 2008, before last round of UNSC sanctions kicked in, was 498 billion USD. Assuming an average 3% growth, our today's GDP should be 780 billion at least.

Saudi Arabia had more or less similar GDP to Iran in 2008, approximated at $519 billion. Now the Saudi GDP is close to $1.3T and Iran's GDP is hardly $300 billion.

See how the math adds up to over a trillion USD now?

Iran has lost over $300 billion in the Ramadhan war alone.
