Iran will have to retaliate to save face, former US State Department adviser says​

Iran has no choice but to retaliate against Israel’s attack, US foreign policy expert and former US State Department adviser Vali Nasr told CNN’s Becky Anderson, adding that it may take the shape of a prolonged war of attrition.

Nasr added that if this attack was a tactic to bring Iran to the negotiating table, it is unlikely to work.

Washington has long sought to limit Tehran’s nuclear capacity, with the most recent negotiations in Rome last month ending with no agreement. A sixth round of US-Iran talks had been scheduled for Sunday in Oman — and it’s not clear if it will go ahead.

“Trump misunderstood Iran,” Nasr said, and now, “instead of talking, we’re going to see use of weapons as a tool in the negotiations.”

“This regime’s back is put to the wall. If it doesn’t respond, it will lose all credibility, it will be weak and the Israelis are not going to stop,” Nasr said.

It's called a DEAD campaign. All those bombings you witnessed in Iran so far? They were destroying radars and air defences, the goal? Essentially make Iran blind and destroy its ability to protect its airspace.

No air defence or radars means it can't detect or shoot down anything in its own air space, which means Israel has impunity to fly in and bomb whatever: military targets, nuclear facilities, generals, even civilian targets if they want.

Large plumes of smoke were seen rising near Tabriz airport in Iran in what appears to be a new Israeli strike on the northwestern city, videos published by Iranian state-affiliated media showed.

Israel had struck the city’s airport earlier, Iran’s state-run news agencies said.

Eight people were killed and 12 were injured after the attack, the director general of crisis management for East Azerbaijan province said, according to Fars news agency.

The Israeli military has been targeting Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists in a major attack on the Islamic Republic.

After what appeared to be an initial wave of strikes overnight, Israel continued targeting cities across the nation, including Kermanshah, Hamedan, Qasr-e Shirin and Kangavar, state affiliated media reported.

CNN has reached out to the Israeli military for comment.

Unofficial tallies published by Iran’s state-affiliated media said dozens have been killed and injured in the strikes that also targeted the capital Tehran. Iran’s authorities have yet to declare a death toll.
