Iran was under sanctions, they needed quick cash for the weapons. They likely never thought the current war would come to be atleast not this soon.

Iran-Russia relationship was very transactional, even if Russia wasn't bogged down in Ukraine i doubt they would've entered the war on behalf of Iran.
