Israel's Counterstrike in Iran Lacked Long-term Strategy and Helped Tehran Prepare

The strike that Israel carried out in Iran (according to foreign reports) reminds me – and not in a good way – of the decision to launch Operation Lightning Strike at the end of the 2021 war with Hamas.

When the plan was drafted, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Herzl Halevi was still head of the IDF's Southern Command. An unconventional offensive plan that reflected out-of-the-box thinking, it called for a surprise attack that would kill 400 to 500 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists.

The assumption, based on previous wars, was that a few days after an IDF operation in the Gaza Strip began, with the help of a ruse simulating the start of a ground operation, most Hamas terrorists would take shelter in the underground tunnels. The plan was to launch a massive airstrike at that point that would destroy the tunnel shafts, trapping and killing hundreds of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists.

When the war began, around two weeks after that year's election, I had resumed my position as chair of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee's subcommittee on the IDF's preparedness for war. At one of the subcommittee's meetings, IDF officers presented Operation Lightning Strike.

I and another subcommittee member, MK Zeev Elkin, asked how many terrorists they thought the plan would kill. The officers said 100 to 150. Elkin and I were very familiar with the plan and its strategic goal, because a few years earlier, while I was chairing that same subcommittee and Elkin was chairing the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Halevi had presented the same plan to us.

We therefore argued vehemently against implementing the plan, since for the sake of a mere tactical achievement, it would reveal a plan that was considered strategic. This would preclude its use at a better time during the next war with Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

But our argument wasn't accepted, and I doubt it was even brought to the attention of the defense minister and the chief of staff. The plan was carried out that very night. The result was that a mere 50 terrorists were killed. Even worse, it revealed the plan to the enemy, thereby making it impossible to use during future wars.

Recently, various pundits have argued that the rationale behind the attack on Iran was to show the Iranians the capabilities of the Israel Air Force and the vulnerabilities of the defenses around their nuclear facilities. The attack did indeed show the Iranians their current weaknesses. But it will surely spur them to find an appropriate solution, with Russian help, in preparation for the next IDF attack, should there be one in the coming months or years.

Just as with Operation Lightning Strike, in the alleged Israeli strike on Iran the IDF brass, the Defense Ministry and the prime minister couldn't resist the temptation to show off the IAF's capabilities and win admiration in the short term. And indeed, for a fleeting moment, the honor of our military and of all Israelis knew no bounds. But their actions thereby undermined Israel's capabilities in the long run.

Israel's security doctrine, as constructed by its first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, rests on three pillars: deterrence, early warning and offensive initiative. In the early 2000s, under the leadership of MK Dan Meridor, a fourth pillar was added – defense – due to the recognition that in modern military campaigns, offense and defense are equally important.

It was therefore disappointing to discover that in the eyes of Israel's top defense officials, offense alone is still the essence of strategy, even if its long-term effects are limited or even negative. Apparently, the well-known saying that "generals always prepare to fight the last war" holds true for them.

Israel's success, in cooperation with the United States and other countries, in forging an iron wall against Iran's drone and missile attack on Israel was an exceptional strategic achievement. This achievement is of inestimable importance in bolstering our deterrence against future Iranian threats, whether conventional or nuclear – threats that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has deemed the only strategic threat to Israel's existence.

Consequently, Israel should have made do with that achievement rather than revealed its many offensive capabilities – a disclosure that could enable its number-one enemy to prepare for the next war.

those 9 impacts were clearly missiles

9/17 is 53%

we saw almost 17 missile launches in the videos released, so I think it's a bit more than that
53% rate for older Iranian missiles and drones PLUS a heads up to Israel is pretty bad, but soon, you;ll see some on the forum telling us the following :

"Patriot is a top tier long range air defense system..... " @F-22Raptor where are you at?
"Israel has an advanced multi-layered air defense system"- Hamas and Hezbollah rockets and missiles have been ripping through Israel's "integrated air defenses" (IAD) for months but it took the Iranian missiles and drones to convince people that Israel's AD, much like the American one, is overrated and very expensive. Israel is retiring its Patriots- nuff said!! (Emads and Ghadrs retired them by testing them, and they failed, apparently)

Scott Ritter, former un military inspector, claimed that last 9 missiles were landed on Israeli targets, modern missiles, and no one intercepted...and even that are not most modern that iran have btw...Israelis intercepted only old Iranian rockets...pretty bad reality for chosen one, genocidal entity...

Israel only intercepted the intended bait missiles they launched,..., anyways any sceptic guy here, can draw conclusion based on results of this punitive action from Iran on Israel:

No Iranians has been killed on Syria again. The new equation was restored by iranians, no other representative iranians will be target on Syria or other places by israelis, and if they do so they would do using third parties, but they will never again announce about that, being proud of that.

If they do Israel would be subjected to military action, stronger than ever, US or not US.

We will never know about the other missiles that targeted the israeli bases, so we only an draw conclusion from the new equation kept in place by now.

Future we will know, anyways i think Iran will be in war in a matter of a random time, Iran will have to use force again in future, so Iranians must be prepared and military ready.

Yep I think that 4 weeks ago, Iran finally restored deterrence against the entity and would unleash a more punishing attack if the entity hits Iranian targets in Syria again.

Iran can hit any point in Occupied Palestine and both the entity and US are fully aware now of this reality.

It s a joke to read some post here, to say the least. US military branch is absolutely shocked Iran passed the test of air defence systems from Israel. Simply, because they have not better for themselves. The american ones are the israeli ones, i mean.

Russia would never dare to do what Iran did. Iran said to US repeteadly to stay away from this punishment to Israel, and they STAYED AWAY, BECAUSE IRAN. people fails to realize what it means in a military context of domination. Iran was the lion on the park.

The level of humillation Iran has endorsed in US power admin is historic, and still people here does not realize precisely what Iran did in April. Iran give a week of relax time to Israel (plus the US and other lackeys) to be prepared for defence, many sophisticated layers of defense all defeated for a limited attack, all this forced wasting rom the west side wast useless, Iran proved they can check mate Israel and can check mate also US defences on the region.

This is the issue. Iran this time wanted not to go farther, but they can, they have better missiles still to disclose.

At this point, US and Israel should just use quadcopters and play wack a mole with Iranian military bases.

Shame in 2024, Iran struggles against what social media influencers use to film themselves outdoors.

Is that what he was trying to say?

Doesn’t seem very smart painting a roof black, attracts heat. Better to reflect light away then to absorb it.

What he meant is that "Pixel" made a fool of himself with the images searching for Israeli missile impacts, recent images (by Reza Mad) shows what it seems to be a re-painting or "re-enforcing" of the buildings

Supposed "impact" (posted 2 may by Pixel)
