Israel becomes first country to recognise Somaliland

Your open recognition of Israel as a nation is appreciated.
Your tribe leave the world no choice. The USA fund your existence. You can bully into an existence for the time being. Just wait for the clock to tick over. Soon the same. Disappearing act will occur and you will be expelled. Keep your second passport ready….

That is not true. I am from North Eastern Somalia, and the "Somaliland" secessionists control only a section of it. We've been in conflict with them for the past 18 years, the 2023 and 2024 being the worst.

That being said, this move is dangerous for Palestinians, Somalis, Yemenis, Iranians, and every Muslim state that opposes the Zionist designs for the Muslim world. Their goal is to expel at least some of the Palestinians to this region, setup a military base on the Gulf of Eden against Yemen, Iran, and every Muslim nation they are in conflict with. This is a dangerous development.

Protests against "Israel" erupt in Somalia because "Israel" advocates for the division of the African country and has recognized "Somaliland." Devastated by war and colonization, Somalia now joins the resistance against Zionism.
On Tuesday, demonstrators marched through Mogadishu, Baaydhabo, Hobyo, and Guriceel, waving Somali and Palestinian flags and carrying placards denouncing Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state.

Somalia’s National Consultative Council, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, state leaders, and governors, condemned Israel’s recognition as an “illegal act” that undermines peace and stability from the "Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden."

At the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday, all member states except the US criticized Israel’s move, warning it could destabilize Somalia and its neighbors.

The US refrained from condemning Israel's official recognition of the secessionist region of Somalia. However, it asserted that its stance on Somaliland remains unchanged.

Somalia’s UN ambassador, Abu Bakr Dahir Osman, said Israel is intentionally promoting fragmentation and expressed concerns that the move could facilitate the forced relocation of Palestinians to northwestern Somalia. “This contempt for law and morality must be stopped,” he stated.

This is also everyone is expecting Ethiopia to be the second country to recognize it; so they can’t be landlocked, and have a way around the Red Sea, direct to the Indian Ocean.

Somalia is member of the Arab league and the African Union, as well as the president of the United Nations Security Council in January 2026. All these organizations have condemned Israel’s actions. In particular, Saudi Arabia will do everything in its power to ensure Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and that Israel does not find a foothold next to Saudi Arabia. Qatar and Turkey are also expected to aggressively support Somalia.

Developments in Somalia are connected to events in Yemen. The Horn of Africa and the Arabian peninsula are experiencing a major geopolitical and geostrategic changes and so the future will probably be more turbulent. Both Ethiopia and UAE have sided with Israel and this puts them in collision course with Saudi Arabia.

No Israeli journalist should be allowed to step foot into Arab and Muslim land. If done so illegally it's trespassing they should be kidnapped, shot and killed

Great point. This partitioning of Somalia has been cooking for a very long time. Do you remember the Ethiopian invasion of Somali in the last Bush years ?

I think Mr Obama was not interested in it and hence ended the funding for that Ethiopian adventure but now seems project to give Ethiopia a port and Israel a base in Red Sea has been revived.

It just tells us once again that Jews are great long term planners and not really very secretive about it. Muslim countries just need to pay attention.

According to this video, Israel has taken over Berbera Airbase last night in " Somaliland".

With Saudis actions in Yemen, and their support for internationally recognized regimes, they would probably be the force that would want to check this development, if only to minimize potential conflict in the Red Sea, and to immunize as many of what they may perceive as interlopers (not great and middle powers constantly shifting the region balance) into areas near their borders, unsettling their economic hopes.

I have a very very simple question that none of you have answered in a 10 pages long thread.

If Palestine has a right to self determination and existence as an Independent state by the will of its people then why doesn't Somaliland have the same right.

Why do so many of you oppose their Independence, that's quite Hypocritical isn't it

Somalia’s President Says Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland Tied to Plans to Forcibly
Displace Palestinians from Gaza

QNN - December 31, 2025

Somalia’s president has warned that Israel’s recognition of Somaliland carries serious risks for Palestinians and regional stability.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Somaliland accepted three conditions in exchange for Israeli recognition.

These include the resettlement of Palestinians in Somaliland. They also include an Israeli military base on the Gulf of Aden coast. The third condition is Somaliland joining the so-called Abraham Accords.

Mohamud described Israel’s move as “unexpected and strange.”

He said no country had recognized Somaliland in more than three decades.

“After 34 years, Israel suddenly jumped in and said it recognizes Somaliland,” he told Al Jazeera in an interview from Istanbul on Tuesday.

Israel last week became the first country to formally recognize Somaliland.

The region broke away from Somalia in 1991 but failed to gain international recognition.

Mohamud said the recognition was not symbolic.

He said it covered “high-stakes Israeli strategic objectives.”

He warned Israel may try to forcibly displace Palestinians from Gaza to Somalia.

“This will open a box of evils in the world,” he said.

The Somali leader said Israel is trying to export its Gaza problem to the Horn of Africa.

“Israel does not have any peaceful intentions in coming to Somalia,” he said.

He called the move a serious threat that Arabs and Muslims must take seriously.

According to Somali intelligence, there is already an Israeli presence in Somaliland.

Mohamud said the recognition only formalized activities that were already happening secretly.

He also warned that Israel seeks control over key waterways. These include the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Both are vital for global trade and regional security.

Mohamud referred to a 20-point plan released under US President Donald Trump. The plan said no one would be forced to leave Gaza.

However, he said Israel continues to explore ways to expel Palestinians.

He pointed to reports of mysterious flights to South Africa.

The Somali president spoke in Turkiye during a joint appearance with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Both leaders warned the move could destabilize the Horn of Africa.

Israel’s recognition drew swift condemnation. Most UN Security Council members criticized the decision during an emergency meeting in New York.

The United States was the only member to defend Israel’s move. Washington said its position on Somaliland had not changed.

Mohamud dismissed US ambiguity. He said the US clearly supported Somalia’s sovereignty.

Indian, Kashmir is just but one that needs freedom out of the farce called India. A colonizer is not going to get some land away from others and resettle it's unwanted natives elsewhere. Second, zion has doesn't give a hoot about Somalis just like they could care less about your support... they however do care about geopolitics and geoeconomics of the region... besides a shorter launchpad to hostile Houthis.

Now move along...

Every Tom Dick and Harry does not have the right to go off and form their own country. The comparison between Palestinians and Somalis is also flawed as the Palestinians have never had a country of their own, despite struggling for 100 years.

On what basis should Somaliland be allowed to secede? Provide a single compelling point.
