I disagree with the assumption that Hezbollah is lacking in security. Hezbollah is an experienced side but it is taking its chances with a competent force so anything can go wrong at any point in time.

What 'security failure' in any case?

a) If Israel put in a software to 'overheat' the batteries and make them explode would hizbulla be able to stop it? Absolutely not. You think they have engineers who will review line by line the code to figure out what's happening?
b)If israel put in explosive batteries would hizbolla have been able to detect it? No.

Now that this has happened they may do some sample checks I guess. but th bigger point is no secuirty failure. Israel has capabilties that Hizbulla doesn't have the ability to detect or stop.

An explosive looks like nothing else inside an electronic device and would be very obvious.

It is the height of blundering to distribute thousands of pagers without being sure they have not been tampered with.

I do not buy that it would be easy to hide the explosive within the battery as it is not that difficult to detect for the presence of explosives. Literally pull the device apart and see whether there is any explosive material hidden in anything, including inside the battery.

It might be more practical to use devices or dogs that can detect explosives. I don't know how sensitive they can be and whether they would have detected such small amounts in a pager.

Broadcast message to all pagers, firmware modified to send a signal to a battery circuit when message "X" is received, circuit inside battery pack does shortcircuit when the signal is received, and the battery shorcircuit sparks trigger the detonation.

Two ounces might not be easy to detect.

I have just checked the weight of this pager and it is listed as 133g(4.7oz).

Even assume that 1 oz of explosive was planted inside the pager then alarm bells should have rung if Hezbollah could have done something as simple as weigh the devices.

This is just one of so many basic checks that seem not to have been done.

There is no "hindsight" about these suggestions but basic procedures that an organisation like Hezbollah should have as SOPs when using devices that they obtained from outside.
