Every aspect of Israel's planning had to do with the American elections and yet, too many members here, either didn't factor that in or just confined themselves to some stereotypical responses.
But here we are!!! Here we are!!

Is Iran firing back or is it acting like a dear in the headlight?

Israeli military says it is conducting strikes on military targets in Iran

Raf Sanchez
Reporting from Tel Aviv
The Israel Defense Forces said tonight that it is conducting "precise strikes on military targets in Iran."
The strikes, it said, were in response to months of attacks from Iran against Israel. World leaders have been awaiting Israel's response to a barrage of missiles that were fired from Iran at Israel on Oct. 1.
"The regime in Iran and its proxies in the region have been relentlessly attacking Israel since October 7th — on seven fronts — including direct attacks from Iranian soil," the IDF said in a statement. "Like every other sovereign country in the world, the State of Israel has the right and the duty to respond."
Iranian state media are reporting explosions inside the country’s capital of Tehran.
The Iranian State Television Service, or IRIB, reported sounds of explosions in the city.

I am not sure about many things but for a few things: Netanyahu knows that the hitherto War of Attrition would be a lost cause. So he is trying to drag an unwilling America into the conflict and he is well aware of the political advantages he has during the election cycle.

Drag? US has been entrenched in Israeli atrocities from day 1 and the regime in Washington will do more dirty work for Israel.

Seems like Israel wants to cloak its crimes in Gaza by widening and escalating conflict in the region and involving the US. Also Israel is financially bankrupt and doesn't have the capacity to fight any war so it has to involve other countries like the US to fight on its behalf.

Your reading is wrong. Absolutely wrong. Americans, if they really wanted to be in a frontal war against Iran, would be involved many months ago. Supplying weapons and putting in some special forces etc is not the same as a full fledged American involvement--which probably America can't afford to anyway for more than material reasons: There has to be some Manufactured Consent before that.
Everything is tied to the American elections and its results. Netanyahu is acting like a mad dog right now because he wants to take the 'unique window of opportunity' due to the election cycle. Absolutely.

NY Times reporting.

The Israeli military said early on Saturday that it had begun striking Iran in response to several Iranian attacks on Israel, raising fears that a long-brewing confrontation between two of the most powerful militaries in the Middle East could escalate into an all-out war.

The military said in a statement at 2.30 a.m. that it was “conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran,” adding that it was acting in response to more than a year of attacks on Israel by Iran and its allies across the Middle East.

Israel did not immediately say where or how the strikes were being carried out. Three news agencies run by different branches of the Iranian authorities reported that several blasts were heard near Tehran early on Saturday, but gave no further details.

There was no immediate confirmation that Israel’s attacks had caused the blasts. The agencies said that Tehran itself had not been hit and that civilian airports were operating normally.

But the blasts occurred close enough to the Iranian capital for them to be heard by residents, bringing a war that for Iranians had previously felt far away precariously close to home.

Two Israeli officials said that Israel was attacking military sites that had been involved in recent attacks on Israel, and that the strikes would continue through the early hours of Saturday morning . The officials said that Israel was not striking energy infrastructure, including oil production sites. Two other officials said that the strikes had been carried out by fighter jets. All the officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter.

Israel’s attack marked the first time that a foreign air force had struck Iran since its war with Iraq in the 1980s. During that eight-year conflict, the fighting was mostly concentrated along Iran’s border with Iraq; the area around the capital, Tehran, was largely not a target.

The Israeli strikes on Iran, more than 1,000 miles from Israel, came 26 days after Iran fired several waves of ballistic missiles at Israel, forcing millions of Israelis to take cover in bomb shelters, and damaging several homes and air bases.

This is from the Jerusalem Post website. Interesting points about American trying to distance themselves from it. Not that I believe a word they say.
Anyway, too early to say if this was yet another face-saving exercise to deescalate or the real escalation which Netanyahu wanted around the American elections.
