The agreement will enter into force on Sunday, January 19, 2025
The first phase of the agreement will last for 42 days
Main terms of agreement
Ceasefire: Fighting will cease throughout the Gaza Strip
Withdrawal of Israeli forces: Israeli forces will withdraw eastward and away from densely populated areas, and will be stationed on the border in all areas of the Gaza Strip.
Exchange of prisoners and hostages:
Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages, including civilian women, female soldiers, children, the elderly, sick and wounded civilians
In return, Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners
Humanitarian aid:
The safe and effective introduction and distribution of humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza Strip will be intensified
Rehabilitation of hospitals, health centers and bakeries
Introducing civil defense supplies, fuel, and shelter materials for displaced people
Return of displaced persons: Palestinian civilians will be allowed to return to northern Gaza once the agreement is confirmed
Exchange of the remains of the deceased: The remains of the deceased will be exchanged between the two parties
Health care: It will be facilitated for the sick and wounded to leave for treatment
This agreement represents an important opportunity to alleviate human suffering in Gaza and return the hostages to their homes, and it also provides the first long-term truce since the beginning of the conflict. However, it remains to be seen how these provisions are implemented on the ground and their impact on the situation in the region in the long term.
