Hamas is still strong even though it is indirectly fighting the USA an incredible achievement on its alone.

That's exactly how the Algerian revolutionaries against France thought and believed. This is not about a geographical bubble or other worldly desire. This is for God and belief in doing the right thing and enduring to achieve it with the Help of God and the willingness to sacrifice oneself for this cause. In the end either we have the greater reward which is heaven and the blessings of Allah or the minor reward which is victory in the battlefield. The Hamas soldiers are people who love to die for their cause as much as the IDF soldiers love to go back home alive. And we have people on here were probably saying the same ideas on Jihad in Afghanistan against ussr and 9/11 or Iraqi resistance was an error and pointless.

Looking at the way Hamas have prepared for the battle, I would say yes, it was well planned last stand. The way the US supplied Israel with open check of weapons and supplied 1 ton bombs it was obvious except to the blind what the Zion intent was, to attack and drive out the Palestinians.
