Israel targets Iranian consulate in Damascus in a terrorist attack​

A building next to the Iranian Embassy in the Syrian capital of Damascus comes under a missile attack on April 1, 2024.
Israel has targeted the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital in a terrorist attack, leaving seven people martyred including a senior Revolution Guards commander.
Syria's official news agency, SANA, said the strikes were carried out by “the Israeli enemy” and targeted the Consular Section of the Iranian Embassy in the Mezzeh neighborhood in Damascus on Monday afternoon.
“At approximately 00:17 p.m. today, the Israeli enemy launched an air aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting the Iranian consulate building in Damascus,” SANA said, citing a military source as saying.
“Our air defense media responded to the aggression’s missiles and shot down some of them. The aggression led to the destruction of the entire building and the martyrdom and injury of everyone inside, and work is underway to recover the bodies.”
The news agency also reported that the Israeli aggression also caused major destruction to "neighboring buildings."

Iran's Ambassador to Damascus Hossein Akbari confirmed the reports of the Israeli attack and said the regime had targeted the consular building with six missiles.
Akbari said five to seven people were martyred in the Israeli aggression, including several Iranian advisers who were in the building. Two police officers were also among those killed in the attack.
“We will give a decisive response to this action,” he said. “This regime has no respect for international laws,” the ambassador added. “We will support the resistant nation [of Palestine] and have no fear of the criminality of this regime.”
A commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, and his deputy, Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, were killed in the Israeli attack.

Meanwhile, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad has visited Iran's Embassy following the missile attack.
Condemning the Israeli aggression, Mekdad said, “The Israeli occupation entity will not be able to influence the relations between Iran and Syria.”

World Central Kitchen pausing operations in Gaza after ‘unforgivable’ attack​

Here’s more from World Central Kitchen (WCK) on the Israeli attack that killed seven of the organisation’s team members.

“World Central Kitchen and the world – lost beautiful lives today because of a targeted attack by the [Israeli army],” said World Central Kitchen (WCK) CEO Erin Gore.

“This is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organisations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war,” said Gore. “This is unforgivable”
The statement added that WCK is pausing our operations “immediately” in the region and would “make decisions about the future of our work soon”.

According to a post shared on social media before the attack, WCK was operating more than 60 kitchens in central and southern Gaza, cooking hundreds of thousands of meals each day.

Well it’s not as if these people were hiding in plain sight. They take civilian flights with manifests which can be searched via a software called Cerberus (developed after 9/11) - western intel agencies have access to all global flight manifests.

Second they were in the Iranian Embassy in Syria which I can gather would be under active observation by Israel and their compatriots.

Finally we have seen how Israel has recently been expanding its intelligence operations outside the ME ( see the news about Israeli spies arrested in Malaysia).

So in conclusion it’s not that surprising at all.

BDS Malaysia issued a statement today expressing its concern following the Malaysian government’s allowing of an Israeli diplomat into the country, which officially does not have formal diplomatic ties with Israel.
The statement read,

“BDS Malaysia is appalled and alarmed at the recent visit by Israeli delegates to the ninth World Urban Forum in Malaysia. The forum was hosted by United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN Habitat), a painful irony given Israel’s disgraceful expansion of illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian land and repeated demolition of Palestinian homes.”

Their visit comes hot on the heels of a recent demonstration organized by the government where Prime Minister Najib expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people.


BDS Malaysia noted that the Israeli government and media are already touting the visit as a breakthrough towards normalizing relations between Israel and Malaysia.

“If the Malaysian government was compelled by the UN into allowing the Israeli representatives in, this fact should have been made known and not swept under the rug. This would have allowed Malaysians of conscience who oppose the Israeli oppression of Palestinians to act accordingly,” the statement added.

“We call on the government to uphold its exemplary and bold stance. We further call on the Malaysian government to hold accountable the organizers of the conference and those responsible for this unacceptable breach,” the statement continued as saying.


The group called on the Malaysian government “to apologize to the Palestinians for this colossal betrayal and pledge to not repeat this grave mistake and to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS), against Israel.”

Belgium foreign minister says aid workers ‘must be protected’​

Belgium’s foreign minister has denounced the killings of aid workers in Gaza after seven World Central Kitchen staff were killed there.

“Aid workers do essential work and must be protected, just like civilians,” said Hadja Lahbib, adding “too many of them are victims of the conflict in Gaza”.

“Even in war, there are rules. All parties must respect them. Such acts are unacceptable.”

The secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, Jan Egeland, shared his condolences over the killing of World Central Kitchen aid workers in Gaza.

“Nowhere else are so many aid workers killed,” he said on X, adding a call for a ceasefire.

Targeting of aid workers a violation of international humanitarian law: Expert​

Professor Ben Saul, UN Special Rapporteur on protecting human rights while countering terrorism, said Israel’s reported killing of the World Central Kitchen aid workers in Gaza could be a violation of international humanitarian law and a war crime.

“It’s a human tragedy. But, of course, it could well be a violation of international humanitarian law, under which Israel has a duty not to deliberately target humanitarian relief workers or their convoys or their relief consignments,” Saul told Al Jazeera.

“[Israel] also has a wider duty to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers in a conflict zone; to ensure their freedom of movement and to coordinate with them so that these kinds of tragedies never happen,” he said.

“Under international humanitarian law, if there is a deliberate targeting of any civilian, including humanitarian relief workers, that’s a war crime. If there is a targeting of a military objective, which causes excessive civilian casualties in the area, that would be a war crime. Or if it is an indiscriminate attack,” he added.

“Obviously, given the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the free passage of humanitarian relief is absolutely essential and just last week the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to open more land crossings, precisely because over a million Palestinians in Gaza are currently facing catastrophic levels of hunger, according to the United Nations.”
