This very long conflict, on top of the various conflicts in that region going back to 1940s or even earlier, has made me re-think my own long-held understanding of what's going on in the Middle East. But I think, as the dear departed John Pilger said not long before his death: It is the American empire itself fighting for its survival.
And, like you, I don't want bad economy or dead bodies of Americans coming to the airports and seaports of America, especially not for the Zionists in Israel. However, I do think America has enough natural and human resources to still be a great power by not being an empire.

I'm glad he didn't pour a gallon of unleaded on him and light himself up in front of a Trump court proceeding or an Israeli embassy. We admire the position these fellas are taking; we don't want to see them commit suicide in order to take a stand. As noble & admirable their positions are, that is one of the worst sins in practically every religion. So, while we appreciate their dedication and devotion to the cause, this was the right way to go about it and not the other.

I have a friend who did 3 tours between Iraq & Afghanistan in a span of about 12 years post-911, he was one of those guys who saw what happened that day and couldn't join the fight fast enough. Then he started having doubts shortly into his 2nd tour in Iraq and a bunch of the grunts under him were really misbehaving and treating the locals badly that he had a tough time with them. Then he asked to be transferred so they sent him to Afghanistan and there, things got even worse. He couldn't do it and ended up being honorably discharged. Now he's always dealing with PTSD and his wife is always being comforted by mine and what a mess I tell ya. Feel terrible for them and many of these guys. Luckily he has shown improvement in the last 3 years or so.
