Dont forget US's eventual loss in the Iraq war started with a "shock and awe " campaign that dismembered Saddam's army and similarly "took out many Baathist leaders", but US never expected the insurgency that was born from its invasion to essentially kick it out of Iraq. You all should not be this naive to this war in the Levant is over.
So you agree that, essentially, the US dismembered the Iraqi military and political structure and won that war. That's where the war should have ended, but the military got bogged down in nation-building projects, which wasn't its role. Let us also put another thing into perspective: it was the Sunni-Shia Civil War and various other conflicts that made it hard for them due to a lack of political support back home.
The Americans were fighting with one arm tied behind their backs, and if it went pitbull like the Israelis or like the French and Italians in North Africa. The Americans would have put the insurgency back in its place. Let's not forget the US military was called back when the Iraqis couldn't handle the ISIS threat. Now, they are here to stay.
