They don't actually provide any leverage. Israel cares about the privilege to mass murder and ethnically cleanse Palestinians. That's the only reason they run a whole propaganda campaign around them for months. Despite no Israeli's (except soldiers) having died since a entire year from any attacks out of Gaza. They're using it in a sick attempt to manufacture consent to commit genocide in Gaza and now try to push it even further into an all out ethnic cleansing campaign.
It's a cynical attempt at justifying ethnic cleansing and genocide. Which is not gaining traction but US based Zionist run media is nevertheless pushing it hard to try to normalize and desensitize people to it.

I don't get it, Rafah crossing is Gaza and Egypt so why can't they get through. Have Israel stationed troops there? If so as part of the negotiations they should have asked them to withdraw.

Israel has occupied the border on the Gazan side (the 'Philadelphia Axis'). Israel withdrew from the Netzarim Axis in phase 1 but is scheduled to withdraw from the Philadelphia Axis only in phase 2 (if reached).
