Lethal Israeli Strikes Halve Hamas’ Top Leadership in Gaza​

Israel killed two members of Hamas’ de facto cabinet in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, both sides said, bringing to 11 the death toll within the 20-person forum during a renewed Israeli offensive aimed at destroying the Palestinian faction as a military and governing force.

Salah al-Badawil and Ismail Barhoum were hit in south Gaza by air strikes, which resumed last week after a truce expired, the Israel Defense Forces said. Hamas confirmed their deaths.

According to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, Barhoum had served as de facto prime minister for Gaza, succeeding Isaam Daalis, who was among three members of the forum, known as the Gaza Political Bureau, who were killed last week.

Another six — including Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar — died earlier in the war that erupted after Hamas blindsided Israel with a cross-border killing and kidnapping spree on Oct. 7, 2023. Most of the surviving nine members are abroad.

Sinwar formed the Gaza Political Bureau in 2021 to oversee Hamas governance of the Palestinian enclave.
