Former Israeli Chief of Staff and Defense Minister :
Heads of the defense system - the Chief of Staff, the head of the Mossad, and the acting head of the Shin Bet, the evacuation of an entire population from their homes indiscriminately, the systematic destruction of their homes, and their concentration in a confined area in a "humanitarian city" for the purpose of "voluntary deportation" - this is a series of war crimes under the law, not to mention our moral values. Starving a population to bring about "voluntary deportation"
- this is a war crime and an action contrary to our moral values. Shooting and killing, not in a life-threatening situation - this is murder and a war crime.
Abandoning hostages to their fate is a moral crime, which is not included in the legal framework of war crimes, because no one could have imagined that a government would abandon its citizens and soldiers to cling to power.
You were trained and educated to treat the elected political echelon with respect and in a statesmanlike manner, but also not to obey a "manifestly illegal order with a black flag flying above it." You may not have noticed, the distinction may be blurring, the dilemma is not simple - but we are already there!
It is our duty as citizens to relieve you of this dilemma by replacing the messianic, draft-dodging, and corrupt government. But conduct your actions wisely for the future of the state, so that your subordinates will not be required to carry out acts that will haunt them for the rest of their lives and stain our people and our state.
