Can someone translate this video? We don’t really get much commentary from Chinese military watchers, but this channel seems to indicate, from the pictures, that the PFX is the JF-17’s answer to the Gripen NG, but they show a semi-stealthy JF-17 in the thumbnail and mentions the WS-19 in the video.

Yes if any Chinese members can translate it for us please. Also do you know who this guy is.

Translated earlier in the thread by @CriticalThought

Also @Deino says he is an infotainment guy more than serious commentary (although, a few days or weeks later when his video get English subtitles, I find his point of view interesting, bring up a different more mainstream Chinese perspective)

Inspector Lei thinks Pakistan shouldn’t waste its resource into building up a limited aircraft like the JF-17, and while I hate to agree with him, he’s right that there is only so much we can get out of the JF-17 design. Having said that, I still think the JF-17 can go down the Gripen NG route and a little beyond for a relatively modest cost.

If we look at what Saab envisioned as the replacement for the Gripen; their FS2020 design, and accept that fitting missiles internally will be an issue, we give up on that but work towards a 4.5 gen design. We could get a decent 4.5 gen platform for under $40 million.

The goal being to edge out India’s non-stealth fighters in first detection and achieving a first shot capability; the first look first shot concept but done on a budget.

And if we look at what SAAB has been working on lately, we see a conventional layout drone with a pelikan tail.

Costs have been brought down to make platforms that are now becoming the standard.

If Pakistan can develop a design that work 1st as its manned backbone fighter but also 2nd as a loyal wingman, it could become a supplier to the PLAAF’s need for loyal wingmen and secure a source of continuous funding, which china can pay back in sales of J-31s. China may have loyal wingmen, but many are small and have limited range or are flying wing designs. They need a fighter platform with high performance and modest costs.

Btw the following design is for a plane with the same engine as the Gripen, so right in the same size category as the JF-17

This man is the deputy editor of Air Force Aviation Magazine. He thinks it is difficult to develop a stealth version of JF17. 1. The existing engine thrust is not enough, and it will take some time to replace the WS13; 2. To deal with stealth, the appearance needs to be greatly changed; 3. The light fighter is limited by the size of the body, and the built-in magazine is too small, and can only accommodate two medium-sized missiles at most. ; 4. It is difficult for Pakistan to independently develop a multi-functional mission package. This is roughly what it means.

Ok people this is confirmed now. PFX is a new Fighter Jet program. Either it could be a Grippen E type thing or a close to 5th Generation fighter jet. But it's something new not upgrade of JF-17 BLOCK I and II. It would be officially inaugurated soon.

Also design Phase has been going on for sometime.

I sure hope so. They realize the benefits that can be gained from pushing the design further, especially with a new engine.

I have been thinking about the practical ways the JF-17 design can be improved (for the A2A role) and was thinking about the a couple things. One should be told to PAF privately, but the other should be an obvious one.

Improve the gun. Get an air frame and swap out the current gun for a gun off of one our Mirage 3/5. A better performing gun doesn’t seem like much, but having a decent gun is a low cost improvement that can go a long way.

As for overall improvements, the PAF and PAC Kamra should look towards an improved design that allows the plane to be made in a manned nod unmanned version. A capable unmanned platform, could be marketed to a number of customers looking for a loyal wingman, perhaps even the PLAAF. They may need 1000+ loyal wingman, if the PAC can secure even 5-10% of that kind of business it could a sizable business for them.

The JF-17 is the perfect size to function as a loyal wingman to the J-20

Loyal wingman of 5 generation fighter should be stealthy, I believe it is more suitable with stealth looking drone than 4 generation design plane.

Better use the money to develop stealth drone from clean sheet design.

To be honest. The development of fifth-generation aircraft requires two basic conditions: the first is a wind tunnel; the second is an omnidirectional microwave chamber. These two are indispensable. Without these two, the fifth-generation phones developed are all fake.
If pfx will have no slanted tails than it's bad for stealth, stealth platform alignment says that it must have to avoid 90 degree angles, and vertical tail have a 90 degree angle sir

Given how poorly Azm went, what makes Pakistan think it can develop something "new" in Pakistan ? Makes no logical sense as Pakistan lacks the R&D and Academic institutions, pool of educated trained engineers, Money(!!!) to allow it to develop a fighter jet on its own as of now.

Given that PAF has the JF17C, J10CE and proposed Ka'an and FC31 procurement plans, where and how will a "new" fighter fit in to PAFs roll call ????????

Lets see - i call "cow dung" on it ...

Because Turkey is the technology partner and Arabs will finance it.

So bascially a paint job of Ka'an ? or Hurjet ?? And - why would Arabs finance it when they can do it themselves? Look at what Saudia is doing with Hawks, Typhoons and the "ask" for Tempest.. they are not interested in PAF doing anything for them - they want to do it themselves ...

Nothing about the PFX programme makes any logical sense ...
