JF-17 - Updates, News & Discussion

Today in History

On 01 June 1957, Pakistan Air Force formally raised No 2 Squadron as No 2 Fighter Conversion Squadron, equipped with T-33s and carrying forward the legacy of the RPAF Conversion School at Mauripur, established in 1948.

With the arrival of the JF-17 Thunder in January 2015, the Pride of the Nation, the Squadron entered its current chapter as No 2 Multi Role Squadron.

Yet through every transformation, the spirit of the “Minhasians” has remained unchanged: to fly with courage and to honour forever the legacy of Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider.

First flight happened in 2003 but Thunder's story actually began during Mid 1990s. Here is a 30 year historical snapshot compressing all the development milestone in one infographic.

If you stop with block 3, then what did "Joint Fighter -17" program actually achieved ? It was meant to be our thing. To keep upgrading it based on our needs and technological advancements. I believe we should keep upgrading it.

Block 4 in 2028-30. Make 100 of those to replace older block 1. Then block 5 by 2035-37. Make another 100 of those to replace older block 2. Then block 6.... a new block adter every 5-7 years. While keep retiring those older blocks at end of their life and keep replacing them with these new blocks.

Why not ?

Let us know if you find a mountain of gold. Because honestly… Pakistan just spent three long years to finally reach the point where it can build around 20 Block‑III jets per year. That’s it. Pakistan doesn’t have the money… and it doesn’t have the capacity… to make a brand‑new block every 5 to 7 years. Small upgrades? Sure. A whole new block? No chance. And don’t forget, Pakistan still has to build remaining Block‑III jets for Azerbaijan… and maybe even for Bangladesh. So the workload is already full.

The JF17 Block 1 with SD-10A's still outclasses everything India has except for the Rafales ? The limiting factor maybe airframe lifespan? ( It would be odd to retire Block 1 JF17s before we retire the Mirages imho ! ).

Block 1 and Block 2 will be upgraded with better radar, avionics, sensors and EW suits We might see some block 1 frame decommission sooner but Block 2 should be good for another 10 years.

why retire JF-17 Block1's ? just upgrade them with whatever they can, and use them in COIN operations, they carry more payload than a drone.

Depends on how much airframe life is left in them. They will have been ridden hard(largely to develop tactics on how to use the platform operationally) and the first batch at least has low airframe hours(4,000hrs) only. I don't know if that figure was increased for Block II, and if so - to what value.

even if we use the JF block 1's for another 5 years, we still have a lot of old fighters to replace, F-7PG's and Mirages are already pass if not then close to end of their lives, so before they start crashing endangering the lives of pilots we have to replace them, at least as per CAS we will be getting more J-10CE, i hope that number increase to 50-60 (depends on funds available) and push the J-35's to end of this decade.

Then just sell Pakistan to the highest bidder. Be done with it.

Or maybe, resolve your conflict with India and declare LOC as international border... if it doesn't put your armed forces in existential crisis and threat their existence.

And by the way what is the alternative ? You have made an enemy of a country who is spending $80 billion on defence each year. If you cant even compete with them through JF17 then how will we buy these additional J-10C, J-35, KJ-500, HQ-19. Won't that cost money as well ? Bhai sulha karlo bas.... halaat tight hy. As bajwa said previously, tanks kay lye diesel kay paisy nahe hy.

Fixing Pakistani economy is not a rocket science, it will take few people who are willing to do what it takes. But Establishment has different plans, they want to keep going back to IMF until external loans reaches $500 billion dollars.
