JF-17 - Updates, News & Discussion

In the second half of 2025, CATIC exhibited a JF-17B at the Changchun Airshow in China; based on photographs, it appeared to have been fitted with the WS-21 engine.

Shortly thereafter—around early 2026—Pakistan released footage showing PAC testing a new engine for the JF-17 fighter jet.

These events all point to a single conclusion: the JF-17 fighter series is undergoing an upgrade. This indirectly confirms a previous speculation: the JF-17B3 suffers from a serious lack of engine power. The JF-17B3's avionics system is a downgraded version of the technology from China's 5th-Gen fighter jet. Despite the reduction, its power consumption still exceeds the support limits of the RD-93 series engines.

Once the JF-17 series fighters are equipped with the WS-21 engine, their avionics suite is expected to reach an optimal state. Pakistan could even explore developing specialized platforms based on the JF-17B—such as an electronic warfare (EW) fighter or a mothership for Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) operations. Of course, for now, this remains speculative.
JF-17 Thunder Block-2B or Block-3B?

Is it confirmed that a Block-3B has been developed?

Some 2B were developed as 3B from the get go. All 2Bs can be readily converted to 3B if needed. Those exported to Azerbaijan also share some block 3 tech including triplex FBW, dual racks and wingtip off bore sight capable heat seekers pl10e class.

The block 3 avionics are close to 5th gen tech. The thing features powerful dual computer architecture, voice command interface, real time eye tracking for helmet mounted display, virtual technology support can be displayed on any HDD per requirement, holographic HUD, live virtual construct, ew management system allowing multiple jamming modes using onboard jammer, external jammer or using both.

Pretty much a dark horse.

I guess this is one benefit of needing a light fighter that as soon as it is in the air is basically already in the combat zone. As long as engine is powerful enough to support these functions, to an extent we can sacrifice fuel for avionics.

No long transit times required and even regular CAP is basically on station minutes, if nit seconds after take off

Someone somewhere slipped the look up range of klj7A against 5m2 rcs target in excitement. I

Sooner or later it will switch to WS13/21 series. The 6th prototype has been equipped with WS13 since start.
