A-1 Skyraider

On September 10, 1968, this Douglas A-1D Skyraider, number 134622, from the US Navy's VA-122 Squadron, was spotted at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. In May 1969, this Skyraider was refurbished and sent to the Naval Air Rework Facility in Quonset Point, Rhode Island. It was then transferred to the Air Force, receiving the number 52-134622, and was sent to operate from Pleiku Air Base in South Vietnam with the 1st SOS and 56th SOW. On September 16, 1971, during a mission against Pathet Lao troop positions near Ban Len in the Plain of Jars, Laos, the aircraft was hit by ground fire. It lost oil pressure and had to land at a small airstrip in Ban Nam Tia. When it landed, the tires blew out, and the pilot retracted the landing gear, causing the plane to leave the runway. A CH-54 helicopter was sent to recover the damaged aircraft, but it dropped the Skyraider while trying to lift it out in high winds.Image via Neil Aird
