Boneyard Files: Vertol H-21C Shawnee – The Vietnam Pioneer Left in the Sand

The Vertol H-21C Shawnee was a tandem-rotor transport helicopter developed from Piasecki’s early “Flying Banana” designs. Originally built for cold-weather rescue and transport missions, it later became one of the US Army’s first helicopters used extensively in Vietnam. Though vulnerable in combat and limited by the tropical climate, the H-21C helped shape early American helicopter warfare before being replaced by the UH-1 Huey and CH-47 Chinook.
