The six German Air Force Tornado ECRs currently deployed to the UK for Exercise Cobra Warrior are also undertaking their own training sorties outside of the aforementioned event.

The crews have taken advantage of a number of low flying areas and on September 16 two Tornados, 46+49 and 46+50, practised low-level flying in the Lake District which is part of Low Flying Area 17 (LFA17).

These two aircraft along 46+23, 46+25, 46+32 and 46+51 from Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 51 (TaktLwG 51), arrived at RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire on August 31.

RAF Waddington is also hosting Italian Air Force Eurofighter F-2000As and a Gulfstream E-550A (G550) Conformal Airborne Early Warning (CAEW) aircraft, plus a NATO Boeing E-3A Sentry. A number of additional aircraft are taking part from other bases for the exercise which is scheduled to run to September 23, details can be found here.

In a RAF press release on the exercise Lt Col Kollner of German Air Force stated: “We are very pleased to participate again in this very demanding and well organised international exercise. It will be a chance to fly with a selection of the best Weapon Instructors from the participating countries. Sharing our experiences which will mutually increase our capabilities.”

The exercise is run by 92 Squadron with the RAF’s Air and Space Warfare Centre. Officer Commanding of the aforementioned RAF unit is Wg Cdr Abbott who said: “Exercise Cobra Warrior is the most important exercise that the RAF runs here in the UK and provides us with the opportunity to work with key NATO allies in a simulated contested and degraded operational environment that synchronises multi-domain effects. It is only by doing this that our aviators are able to learn and maintain the highly complex skills that are required to conduct such operations now and in the future as part of a coalition.”

The press release also stated: “For the RAF one other key aspect of the exercise is that it gives the opportunity to complete the required training within the Mission Employment Phase for future RAF Weapons Instructors. The level of training combined with the variety of training partners helps to achieve the required standards within the Weapons School Criteria.”

Interesting. I was not aware of the A-7 being in PAF inventory.

Can you elaborate more on this?

It never was but in the 1980s, the Americans wanted Pakistan to acquire the corsairs instead of the f-16. Pakistan tested them but ultimately insisted on the F-16s.

I did not know that. Very interesting.

Spent quite a bit of time around the SLUF. Nice aircraft. They were based at D-M while the 355th was converting over to the A-10 and the 23rd was being moved.

AZ ANG also flew the A-7 out of TUS. Ironically, they too now fly the F-16. TUS is where some of the Uke pilots are being trained.
