As originally planned, the Croatian Air Force (CroAF) is set to begin retiring its aging fleet of Cold War-era MiG-21 Fishbed fighters in the coming months, with the type being replaced by a fleet of second-hand Dassault Rafale B/Cs.
Currently, just six MiG-21s remain in active CroAF service, comprising four single-seat MiG-21bisD fighters and two dual-seat MiG-21UMD ‘Mongol-B’ fighter-trainers. The first of these were expected to be withdrawn from use by the end of 2023, with the process expected to be fully completed by February 2024. The move will temporarily leave the CroAF devoid of its domestic Air Policing capabilities until the arrival of its initial ex-French Air and Space Force (FASF) Rafale B/C fighters in the first half of 2024.
During an official visit to the new hangars and numerous other facilities that are currently being built for the Rafales at Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport (otherwise known as Pleso Airport), Croatia’s Minister of Defense Ivan Anušic said that the required infrastructure will be ready to accept the first four Rafales, which are scheduled to arrive in May. This initial batch of aircraft may be delivered as early as April, with the remaining eight airframes expected to join them by the end of this year or early 2025 at the latest.
The CroAF took delivery of its fourth ex-FASF Rafale – a single-seat Rafale C (151) – on December 16, just two days after the fighter was seen flying in full CroAF markings at Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport in France. Meanwhile, on January 4, some of the Croatia’s remaining MiG-21s participated in a ceremony to mark the 32nd anniversary of 191 Eskadrile Lovačkih Aviona (Fighter Squadron) ‘Vitezovi (Knights)’ – the CroAF’s sole MiG-21 unit – at Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport.
