Kamala Harris laughed as Donald Trump called her a Marxist during the early stages of a presidential debate in which the candidates sparred over immigration and the economy.
Trump, the former president, and Harris, the vice-president, met for the first time during a televised showdown in Philadelphia on Tuesday night that may prove crucial in the outcome of the election.
They exchanged handshakes on stage at the National Constitution Center before cordiality went out of the window and the rivals argued over economics.
The televised debate has taken on immense importance given the truncated nature of the race
