The Sindh government has approved an initial Rs50 billion master plan, with a long-term vision to invest up to Rs100 billion, to transform Civil Hospital Karachi into a state-of-the-art hospital.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said this presiding over a high-level meeting on Monday to finalise a massive redevelopment master plan for Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), aiming to convert it into a world-class medical facility.

The meeting was attended by provincial ministers and top officials, including Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho, Chairman P&D Najm Shah, and MS Civil Hospital Dr Khalid Bukhari. Notably, prominent social figures such as Faisal Edhi, Mushtaq Chhapra, Dr Saad Khalid Niaz, and Shahid Abdullah also participated to discuss private-sector partnerships.

CM Murad announced that the Sindh government is launching this major development project to overhaul the city’s healthcare system.

Civil hospital’s total area will be doubled. The current capacity of 2,142 beds will be increased by an additional 500 beds.

Dilapidated structures will be replaced with modern Medical and Surgical Towers. Construction of the Abdul Sattar Edhi Medical Tower is set to begin immediately.

The plan includes a new OPD block, a modernised Burns Ward, a dedicated Jail Ward, a state-of-the-art mortuary, and an advanced waste management system.

Special hostels for doctors and nurses, along with new administrative blocks, will be constructed.

The chief minister issued strict directives to ensure the historical heritage and status of Civil Hospital is preserved during the expansion. Additionally, roads surrounding the hospital will be widened to facilitate the smooth movement of ambulances and patients.

To oversee the project, a board comprising both government and private-sector experts will be formed. The first board meeting is scheduled to take place after Eid-ul-Fitr to initiate formal work on the master plan.

KARACHI: After years of delays and failed revival attempts, the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project received a boost on Tuesday as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), giving a nod to the Sindh government’s request, assured it of $1 billion support in funding, raising hopes for revival of the long-delayed transport scheme.

A high-level ADB delegation met Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah and informed him that the bank was ready to finance the KCR revival with $1 billion, including an initial $10 million for preparatory work such as design review, operational planning, institutional arrangements and financing models.

The latest meeting reflects Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah’s efforts to explore alternative financing options after the KCR failed to gain priority status under CPEC projects.
