Police official martyred as terrorists open fire on vehicle in KP’s Lakki Marwat

LAKKI MARWAT: A police official was martyred in a gun attack in the Wanda Jogi area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district on Monday.

The district police’s spokesperson, Qudratullah, confirming the attack, said that “the official was going to his place of duty in a private pickup when terrorists riding on motorcycles intercepted the vehicle and opened fire on him”.

The incident occurred within the limits of the Shaheed Haibat Ali Khan police station in Darra Pezu Town.

The police official was identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mumtaz Ali, and was posted as the muharir of City Police Station in Tank.

The assailants managed to flee, while the police have launched a search operation, Qudratullah added.

The body of the deceased was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for medico-legal formalities, he added.

Later, funeral prayers for the deceased were offered at the police lines in the District Headquarters Complex, Tajazai.

Recently, many areas of KP have seen a series of terrorist attacks, particularly targeting police personnel.

DI KHAN: Assistant Sub Inspector Mumtaz Ali was shot dead by unidentified attackers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district, police said Monday.

In a separate incident, a police constable earlier reported abducted in the Tank area was later found dead, officials said.

Police said four armed men intercepted a pickup vehicle near Adda Wanda Jogi in the Ghazni Khel area and forced ASI Mumtaz Ali out before opening fire.

The officer was posted in Tank. The attack took place within the jurisdiction of Pizo Police Station, police said.

Mumtaz Ali was rushed to a hospital but died of his injuries. Police said an investigation had been launched.

Officials said the attackers arrived on motorcycles and were believed to have used off-road routes from the Malagan side. They fled along the same route after the attack, police added.

In a separate incident in Tank, police confirmed the killing of Constable Sajjad Hussain. He had earlier been reported abducted from the Shah Alam Abad area while on leave.

Police said his body was recovered and shifted to a hospital for medico-legal formalities. Officials said efforts were under way to determine the circumstances surrounding his killing.

An Army major embraced martyrdom while five terrorists belonging to Indian proxy Fitna al Khawarij were killed during an intelligence-based operation in the general area of Khar, Bajaur district, the military’s media wing said on Monday.

According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation was conducted on December 29, 2025, following reports of the presence of terrorists in the area. During the conduct of the operation, effective engagement by security forces resulted in five Indian-sponsored Khawarij being killed.

The ISPR said that during an intense exchange of fire, Major Adeel Zaman (36), a resident of Dera Ismail Khan district, who was leading his troops from the front, fought gallantly and rendered the ultimate sacrifice, embracing shahadat.

Pakistan has recorded a significant drop in cross-border terrorist attacks and violence-linked fatalities after it closed down the border to Afghanistan on October 11.

Terrorist attacks went down by almost 17 per cent in December, preceded by 9pc decline in November. Terrorist violence-linked fatalities among civilians and security officials also fell in the last quarter of 2025, by nearly 4pc and 19pc each in November and December, shows data collected by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) as part of its annual security report 2025.

Man killed, 2 cops among 3 injured in terrorist attack on police post in Bajaur

BAJAUR: A man was killed while three others, including two cops, were injured after unknown terrorists attacked a police post in Bajaur district’s Barang tehsil in the early hours of Saturday.

Police and local residents said the attack on the police post, located in the hilly Kohi Sar area about 22 kilometres from Khar, the district headquarters, occurred at around 2am.

Israr Khan, the spokesperson for the district police, told Dawn that the deceased was identified as 60-year-old Naseem Gul, a local resident. He added that the injured included two cops, 35-year-old Constable Suliman Khan and 58-year-old Constable Saz Muhammad, and 28-year-old Sahibzada, a school watchman.

He said the injured were taken to the District Headquarter Hospital in Khar for treatment, where their condition was said to be stable.

He said terrorists used both heavy and light weapons in the attack. The police spokesperson said that soon after the attack, a joint team comprising security forces and police reached the area and launched a clearance operation.
 
Despite record militant deaths, Pakistan saw a sharp escalation in militant violence in 2025, with terrorist attacks rising by 34 per cent and terrorism-related fatalities increasing by 21 per cent year on year, according to data released by the Islamabad-based Pak Institute for Peace Studies. As many as 699 terrorist attacks were recorded countrywide during the year.

This violence claimed at least 1,034 lives and left 1,366 injured, underscoring a rising trajectory of militancy that has persisted since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021.

LAKKI MARWAT/ BANNU: Three traffic police personnel were martyred in firing by suspected terrorists in the Serai Naurang area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district on Sunday.

Qudratullah, spokesperson for the district police officer (DPO), told Dawn the three traffic policemen were on duty near the Dil Begu Khel area when “unidentified terrorists, who were on a motorcycle” opened fire on them.

As a result, they died on the spot, the spokesperson said.

Ticketing officer in-charge Jalal Khan was among the martyred, he said, adding that two other personnel were identified as Azizullah and Abdullah.

The bodies were moved to Naurang Hospital, and police have launched a search operation at the site of the incident, Qudratullah said.
 
In a separate incident, police officer Rashid Khan was shot dead by assailants on a motorcycle in the Kaffshi Khel area within the limits of Mandan police station in Bannu.
