At least nine terrorists have been killed in a three-day operation conducted by police and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Upper Dir, Aaj News reported on Tuesday.

Two civilians were also martyred and several police officials sustained bullet injuries in exchange of fire between security forces and terrorists.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi hailed wiping out of the terrorists affiliated with the network referred to as Fitna al-Hindustan.

PM Shehbaz lauded the security personnel and their officers for the successful operation against the terrorists, saying, “CTD and police officers and personnel are working day and night to protect the beloved homeland from the vile designs of the Khawarij miscreants.

“The entire nation, including myself, is proud of our brave officers and personnel,” the prime minister said.

Premier Shehbaz also expressed grief over the martyrdom of citizens during the operation, praying for the elevation of their ranks and patience for their families.

He also prayed for the swift recovery of the personnel injured during the operation and directed that they be provided with the best possible medical facilities.

Interior Minister Naqvi said by sending nine terrorists to their ultimate end, the KP Police and CTD had demonstrated exceptional courage and professionalism. “I salute the brave sons of the police and CTD for this major achievement. The entire nation is proud of their valor.”

At least one policeman was martyred and three terrorists were killed in a firing incident in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kohat district, police said on Saturday.

According to Regional Police Officer Kohat Abbas Majeed Marwat, “One policeman was martyred and two others were injured in an operation against terrorists.”

He said, “Three terrorists have been killed and several others injured as police retaliated [against terrorists] in the mountains of Darmalak.” An operation is underway to arrest the injured terrorists, the official added.

“We will not let the sacrifices of our martyrs go in vain and our war against terrorism will continue.”

Earlier today, a statement from the Rescue 1122 read, “A tragic incident of firing on a police vehicle took place near the Darmalak police post in Kohat.”

As a result of the firing, one policeman was martyred on the spot and two policemen were injured, the statement said, adding that the injured officials were taken to Kohat District Headquarters Hospital.

Recent terrorist attacks have predominantly targeted the police, law enforcement agencies’ personnel and security forces. In response, the state has also intensified its counterterrorism operations.

Earlier this month, two Federal Constabulary personnel were martyred and 18 others were injured in a terrorist attack in KP’s Hangu district.

On August 14, five cops were martyred and another eight left injured as militants attacked police checkpoints at different locations across KP, including Peshawar, Upper Dir and Lower Dir.

Three “wanted terrorists” were killed during a joint operation between the regional police and the Counter Terrorism Department in Bannu district in July.

Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in terror activities over the past year, especially in KP and Balochistan, after the proscribed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.

An explosion at a girls’ primary school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district partially damaged the building, though no casualties were reported, police said on Sunday.

Speaking to Dawn.com, District Police Officer (DPO) Nazeer Khan said, “The incident took place late Saturday night when an explosion occurred at a girl’s primary school in the Wanda Zahid Gul area, situated within the jurisdiction of Daddiwala Police Station.”

He said that due to the explosion, carried out through an improvised explosive device (IED), the school’s building was partially damaged.

“Luckily, no casualties were reported,” he said, adding that a heavy contingent of police had been deployed in the area.

DPO Khan further said that there were two IEDs planted in the school.

“One of the IEDs exploded, while the other one was discovered when the police reached the incident site and carried out an inspection,” he said. “It was successfully defused by the bomb disposal squad.”

DPO Khan said that a search operation was underway in the district to locate the perpetrators.

Lakki Marwat has long been a hotspot for terrorism and violence, with unrest dating back to the early 2000s. While security operations brought a period of relative calm, militant activity has resurged in recent years, straining local peace efforts and heightening fears of renewed instability.
