BANNU: A police constable was martyred after unidentified assailants opened fire on him near Lora Bridge in Bannu on Monday.

Police identified the deceased as Umar Niaz Khan, who was on his way to report for duty. He was posted at the Bannu Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Bungalow.

Local sources also said that unidentified armed assailants forced the police constable off a rickshaw before opening fire on him and killing him on the spot.

Following the attack, the police and the peace committee cordoned off the area. They launched a search operation to trace the attackers, and efforts were underway to apprehend those responsible.

1 killed, 6 others injured in suspected drone strike in Peshawar outskirts

PESHAWAR: A woman was killed while six others were injured in a suspected drone strike in the Pastawana area of the Hassan Khel subdivision on the outskirts of Peshawar late on Tuesday night.

Sources initially said that seven people, all belonging to the same family, were immediately taken to the hospital after the incident was reported. They added that one of the injured persons, a woman, was seriously wounded and in critical condition.

Later, locals said that two people, including a man identified as Sher Mast and his 15-year-old son, were still being treated at Lady Reading Hospital while the others were discharged early on Wednesday.

An elder from Hassan Khel confirmed to Dawn that Sher Mast’s daughter-in-law had died.

In April, a suspected drone strike had caused minor damage to a mosque also located in Hassan Khel subdivision. However, no casualties were reported in the incident.

Sources said the strike took place in Chandoka area, on the border between Peshawar and Kohat.

BAJAUR: Three people have been killed and 10 others injured in an incident that police suspect involved the use of a quadcopter drone to drop a bomb on a house in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district.

Police sources told Dawn that the incident took place late on Wednesday near the Dama Dola area of Bajaur’s War Mamund tehsil.

According to the sources, the deceased include a five-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, and all 13 victims belonged to the same family.

The bodies and the injured were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Khar, the sources said, adding that a police team was sent to the site of the incident to collect evidence and ascertain the circumstances of the incident.

Mamund Circle Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Saidur Rehman, confirming the casualties, told the media that an investigation had been launched to determine who the perpetrators were.

In the recent past, multiple incidents of suspected drone attacks have been reported in Bajaur, with one having taken place as recently as Sunday, in which a child was killed and a woman was injured.

Earlier, on May 21, two schoolchildren were killed after a quadcopter drone, reportedly operated from an unknown location, struck a hilly area of KP’s Bajaur.
